Music Review: Underappreciated Greatness From The Motor City!

This recently released collection of singles and "B" sides from Detroit Soul
Singer Steve Mancha is a delight. Fans of great Rhythm & Blues singing, or children of the 60's for whom Berry Gordy and Motown made up so much of the soundtrack of their lives may find something here to enjoy. The superb liner notes by David Cole give us wonderful background on Mr. Mancha ~
One of my favorite tunes of that era is "She's Not Just Another Woman" by The Eighth Day (not included here) on Motown offshoot label Invictus. The groove was funky, slinky, fresh and greasy all at once, the bass playing was spectacular! But the lead vocals were up there with Marvin Gaye's finest, singing of the inspiration of love, emoting and giving 100% to every word, every note and melismatic turn.. and yes, bringing some Church to the airwaves. This great singer was Detroit native Clyde Wilson who for career purposes later changed his name to Steve Mancha. This collection evokes much of that incredible sound; While not all of the songwriting and production value is as refined as the more familiar Motown catalog, Steve Mancha's singing is consistently inspired, smooth and romantic, aching and passionate as the songs demanded. Amongst many other fine singles here, "Hate Yourself In The Morning" (written by Mr. Mancha & producer Don Davis) is a classic from this great but underappreciated singer. His sound, phrasing and delivery of the song are as good as anything from the era. It was our loss in the 60's and 70's that we didn't hear more from him. This CD compilation "Detroit Soulman: The Best Of Steve Mancha" begins to make up for that. Many thanks to British record company [...]for bringing this American music back to the states!
