Music Review: The Phonics Return

After 2001's Just Enough Education To Perform, which was of course a resounding success with multiple singles, The Stereophonics return this year with their fourth album. You Gotta Go There to Come Back sees the band continue on their journey from spunky rockers to established and successful act. It's an old rock cliche that all bands will inevitably "chill-out," and The Phonics have indeed caught heat for doing just that. Accordingly, "Madama Helga," this album's first single, was written especially to combat the critics. Besides that track, however, most of You Gotta Go There to Come Back sees Kelly Jones flex his songwriting muscles. From second single "Maybe Tomorrow," one of the absolute best songs of the year, to just about the rest of the album, you can almost hear Jones sitting down with nothing but a pen, paper, an acoustic guitar, and some late-night inspiration. The tracks here run from bluesy songs such as "I Miss You Now" to country-ish shuffles like "You Stole My Money Honey" to darker orchestrated numbers like "Rainbows And Pots Of Gold." Although none of the tracks really reach the level of "Maybe Tomorrow," You Gotta Go There to Come Back is quite good as an album. The songs fit together well, and the overall atmosphere is captured consistently throughout. Nothing sounds like it doesn't belong. While The Phonics have yet to completely blow me away, You Gotta Go There to Come Back is an album that sounds complete. Kelly Jones is a good songwriter who writes ambigious "you-me-I" lyrics better than just about anyone. I've always loved the bluesy style of this band, and I, for one, applaud their softer direction. Jones' unique sandpaper voice will always supply the attitude anyway, so the band trying to write better melodies is not a bad thing at all. They haven't really reached their potential yet, but You Gotta Go There to Come Back sows the seeds for a spectacular next album. The extras, videos for the two singles as well as a documentary of the making of the album, are also satisfying. And, as always with this band, the CD booklet is almost interesting enough to purchase on its own.
