Music Review: Sonicus Interruptus

Proleptic Marxisms aside, the early Stereolab didn't so much rock as cruise along comfortably and smoothly. Borrowing gleefully from the repetitive (not to say redundant) rhythms of Krautrock and The Velvet Underground, with the occasional Booker T melody thrown in for good measure--"Super-Electric" is only the first of several sonic kitchen sinks here--this collection manages a cohesiveness making it hard to believe these tracks were recorded and released at different times. There's something ironic about the reactionary vision here; perhaps it's that while throwing its collective soul so decisively into the past, Stereolab has its Collectivist mind on the future. In a perpetual state of catching up and digressing with itself, the tension generated by attempting to have it both ways is perpetually just on the verge of being released. Inevitably--and fortunately--however, the dialectic never quite synthesizes. Which makes for some very compelling, if familiar (not to say frustrated), listening. You may think you've heard it all somewhere before. And if you've been listening at all, you have.
