Music Review: Not for Sondheim purists!!!

I cannot begin to describe how excited I was at the prospect of singing "Ladies Who Lunch" from "Company" at my local bar. Unfortunately, the geniuses at Pocketsongs thought it would be a good idea to merge this masterpiece with "Pretty Women" from "Sweeny Todd". Each song on its own is fantastic, but when put together, the result is awkward and bizarre. They should have left both songs alone!!! Oddly enough, this is the only song which gets this kind of arrangement.
Hmmmm... The product description reads: "Featuring note-perfect renditions (in the original keys and arrangements) of 16 famous songs... perfectly accurate background tracks for each song". Well this certainly isn't an accurate description! If you are looking for a karaoke cd you can pop in and immediately sing to, then keep looking. I am a rabid Sondheim fan, and I found most of the tracks difficult to follow.
Almost all of the tracks sounded cheap too; my nine year-old niece could do better on her fisher-price keyboard. The best of the bunch are as follows:
#2 Could I Leave You? - Follies
#5 I'm Still Here - Follies
#7 Losing My Mind - Follies
#9 Being Alive - Company (This one just barely made this list)
#15 Sooner or Later - Dick Tracy
(Apparently a Pocketsongs executive is a fan of "Follies")
The only reason I am giving this cd two stars is because of this list. If you are a fan of these songs, then it might be worth your while. Just be prepared for cheap sounding tracks.
