Music Review: Disappointment for both opera and musical fans

Her voice is like custard- smooth and milky, but with a slight veil that makes custard different from whipped cream. In Only Love, Sumi Jo sings some of the greatest songs from musicals and pop. Most of the tunes are melodic with a tint of sadness, which makes it good to listen on a rainy day, sitting by a window with a cup of coffee.
However, for Jo's opera fans, it must have been a disappointment because none of her singing characteristics- her high twittering voice or powerful forte- were depicted in this album. Overall, it is very quiet and subtle and the voice doesn't sound much like Jo. Then again, it wasn't very much appreciated by musical fans either. Although Jo's voice is beautiful when she sings opera, it lacks the passion and "raw feelings" that have to be put into pieces like "Someone Like You" from the musical Jekyll and Hyde. Her interpretation of the famous "I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls" which was also sung by the singer Enya some time ago, was quite sweet like a forgotten lullaby, but the musical numbers such as "Still Believe" don't have the heart-wrenching desperate emotion that is essential to the storyline of the musical Miss Saigon. Jo sings like Jo- she doesn't put herself into the characters from the musical.
Of course, since it is Jo's interpretation, there really is no need to stay true to the original Broadway version of the song. But then the album doesn't seem to have much color- and for those who don't know musicals much, all songs sound almost the same. The terrible orchestration also contributed in making the color of album monotone.
This isn't the first time a famous singer tried another genre. When Sarah Brightman sang opera, many people thought that it would have been better if she just stuck to musicals and semi-classic. It is not that Jo and Brightman don't sing well- it is just that they have a very strong image, and the new attempt at another genre blurs our impressions of them. Only Love was a bestseller when it first came out, but if the same album had been made by some unknown artist, no one would have bought it at all.
Although it is not the perfect collection of musicals, nor is it opera, it is a good album for easy listening- for cafes or for long drives. The selection of famous songs alone at least make you feel that you didn't waste your money.
