Music Review: A Marketing Decision

Soundgarden may have never been the biggest selling band in the world or commercial darlings like their grunge counterparts Nirvana and Pearl Jam but they achieved a sense of honesty and straightforwardness that never wavered even in the most mainstream of circumstances. Their demise went somewhat unnoticed in the dying notion of grunge in 1997 and by the looks of their final album Down on the Upside; they had gone slightly past their prime. Nevertheless, their reunion was a pleasant surprise followed by months of a lack of relevant events aside from a live show here and there. Not taking the route of other alternative rock groups such as Stone Temple Pilots and Alice in Chains, Soundgarden chose a lower key route with Telephantasm: A Retrospective being the first major declaration of reunion.

With the band's career bookend being 1997's A-Sides, it may be hard to justify the release of a second compilation containing most of the same tracks with a deep cut, rarity and live rendition here and there. However, the move is simple plea for newer audiences to take notice of their history to build the momentum for the future. So in all meanings of the phrase, Telephantasm is simply a marketing decision for a band that has been out of the spotlight for 13 years. Whether it is a successful marketing decision may be a little doubtful considering the styles of Soundgarden aren't exactly the most endearing for an electro-pop driven musical climate of 2011. The collection of material on the album is largely expected with the band's bigger hits "Black Hole Sun" and "Fell On Black Days" bridged between the band's early vigor ("Flower" and "Hands All Over") and their past-heyday period ("Pretty Noose" and "Blow Up the Outside World").

There are some unexpected additions including live versions of "Get on the Snake," "Blow Up the Outside World" and "Jesus Christ Pose," the rarity "Birth Ritual," the single version of "Room a Thousand Years Wide," the superior radio version of "Fell on Black Days," the new song "Black Rain" from the Badmotorfinger sessions and the deep cuts "Get on the Snake, "Dusty" and "Snakes & Bulldozers," that exemplifies Chris Cornell's marvelous vocal range. These additions keep the compilation from seeming identical to A Sides and keep something so nostalgic a bit fresher. However, the main draw of this hit package is the bonus DVD that contains 14 of the band's music videos with additional bonus videos featuring alternate versions. While most of the videos are marred by the grainy, badly edited and visibly dated video production values of the early-to-mid 1990s, they still capture a band in their prime during the last period when music was actually good.

Most can complain about what this could have been and yes it would been more worthwhile to see a B-sides collection or a live DVD but if you dislike buying packages of material you already have or disinterested in music videos, this is a collection to skip in favor of a new album. But if a die-hard Soundgarden fan or devoted Chris Cornell followers like me, this material is reasonably satisfying with an alternate experience of older songs, preserved classics and videos previously unavailable to most households.

Soundgarden will release their first collection of music since 1996 in the form of Telephantasm on September 28th in the US and September 27th internationally. This multi-label, career-spanning retrospective album includes beloved band hits, deep back catalogue cuts and a never-before-heard unreleased track entitled "Black Rain," taken from the Badmotorfinger recording sessions. Telephantasm marks the first time ever a collection of its kind has been collated in one place. The Limited Deluxe Edition of Telephantasm includes a double-disc with 12 additional tracks, 5 of which are previously unreleased, and Soundgarden's first-ever DVD, featuring 20 videos, 13 of which have never been released.
