Music Review: I tried and tried, really I did...

One of the neat things about Amazon and the "net" in general is that it gives us the opportunity to express views and communicate with one another. I especially like saying good things about the work that's being done, in music and books and other stuff as well. And, I like reading the good things being said about others better than the bad. Criticism, however well-founded, just seems to radiate bad-vibes. Well, in this case I need to be negative so as to possibly save some other person [some] bucks on this CD....I'm sorry--I really tried to get it or find the good that all of you see in this.

I played the thing about five times. It irritated the living daylights out of me each time. Danceable? Comparing this to the Talking Heads? To Cake? No way. This music is basically some guy talking in a slow sort of monotonous way saying things which I didn't find clever or inspiring. No notable melody, harmony, rythym, or virtuosity. Normally I like "avant garde" takes on most things....and I know some of the best stuff can be appreciated only after acquiring a taste for it. No acquisition here this time.

I don't consider this music; instead, I think it is more like a weird poetry reading, or perhaps the sound-track to some type of performance art. Unfortunately, I can't appreciate it on those levels either because it doesn't seem like good poetry and the sound is abrasive. This CD made me feel like I had low blood-sugar or a migraine or some other incipient health condition like a nasal infection, etc.

So, obviously I'm in the minority on this CD, unless the vast masses have just decided to never think of Soul Coughing again, and to put the bad experience behind them, and have failed to warn others of this pseudo-funky band. Actually, my theory is that one of girlfriends of Soul Coughing has entered in all 25 5-star reviews. I think that is so cute (although I'm out [some bucks] because of it): Love is blind (and apparently deaf as well).
