Music Review: Sloppy Seconds

It seems the Racing Fan reviewer always picks PROVEN performers to review and fawns over them like Merv Griffin on his old TV talk show. I have no such adoration for Sonny James. Even as his career was drawing to a close, he was still fervently covering PROVEN pop/soul/blues hits for his core "Bubba" audience to add a few more bucks to his buy-the-farm retirement. "Sonny" (born James Loden) never met somebody else's hit he didn't like. Taking nothing away from his presentable voice or delivery, I recall very well my impression of that during his heyday which remains as opinion today. Also, given the British obsession with American soul/blues singers, the Railbird Reviewer might have noted that it was not Theresa Brewer but Ivory Joe Hunter that "Sonny" was aping as Ivory Joe wrote and first recorded both "Empty Arms" and "Since I Met You Baby". James' best remembered song, "Young Love" (co-written by Carole Joyner who died too soon) reached #2 on the American charts at the same time that the Tab Hunter version was #1, a phenomenon that has never been repeated. ("Sonny" was the better singer but Tab Hunter <another made-up name> was a handsome actor with a fan base of the usual airhead teenage girls and whose minimal acting skills were surpassed only by his inability to sing). If you want to hear the best versions of the songs here, buy "Bright Lights, Big City" by Jimmy Reed, "Running Bear" by Johnny Preston (written by J. P. Richardson, The Big Bopper), etc. If you want the Muzak versions, lay your money down right here. Eight to five says Reviewer Harris did.
