Music Review: Horror Music

EVOL is an album of engaging, atmospheric, and flat-out nightmarish music. It is also an excellent example Sonic Youth's trademark dissonent, guitar-driven sound that has proved so influential in modern rock music. The mood ranges from sheer terror (or perhaps some kind of psychotic, violent pleasure), as in "Death To Our Friends", to lingering uneasiness, as in "Secret Girl". The vocals sound as if Thurston/Gordon/Ranaldo are in some kind of trance, which adds to the otherworldliness of the music. Then there are the lyrics, which are fittingly disturbing for the most part (just look at some of the titles). It is what I imagine a person's darkest thoughts would sound like if they were to be converted to music.
I believe this album was meant to be listened to in the dark (or at least at night, if you must insist on keeping the room lit for some reason or another). It's easier that way for the listener to get lost in the album's distorted world of chilling sounds and visions. It's a rewarding experience.
This is a great CD for anyone getting into Sonic Youth. Check this out alongside "Daydream Nation", "Goo", and "A Thousand leaves".

New York City's Lower East Side has always attracted bohemian freaks looking to shock the world, but with EVOL (Love spelled backwards)--their third album after a live tape and several EPs--Sonic Youth finally figured a way to make their skronk count. Combining alternate guitar tunings with nearly linear songwriting, SY proved they could harness their energy into a combustible engine. The multititled closer, "Expressway to Yr.
