Music reviews of Tha Last Meal

Music Review: Beautiful album; Snoop's best since Death Row days.
Rating: 5 Stars

Snoop made a remarkable effort on this album. This album really shows how Snoop has brought soul back into his music. Top Dogg was also a great album, but here Snoop becomes even more mature and interesting to hear. He also brings back memories of his more playful-sounding days. It has the same sunshine-laced beats we missed in a good amount of his No Limit Records music. In my opinion Snoop worked with one of rap's most horrible label's, No Limit, and still managed to bring us some good West Coast flavored music! Dr. Dre's 2001 was disappointing in beats and lyrics, so it's good to see Dr. Dre come back with some nice beats. The only thing you really can criticize about this album is that there are no appearances by Warren G, Kurupt (who only talks at the end of one track), Xzibit or Daz Dillinger. Also, I think Kokane, former Ruthless rapper/singer, is on the album way too much (about eight tracks). Don't get me wrong, I like him too, but there should be a limit. And tracks like "Sunshine", "No Backtracking" featuring George Clinton and Brides Of Funkenstein were left off the album. But I'm just happy Snoop made another great album! Production comes from Dr. Dre, Meech Wells, Jelly Roll, and of course Battlecat. The production on the album is great and brings back the greatness of Snoop's raps. Also, The Eastsidaz, Kokane, Bad Azz, Nate Dogg, Suga Free, Lady Of Rage, Ice Cube, MC Ren, Eve, and many more make appearances on here, adding to the flavor. Also, Snoop gets even with Death Row Records and Suge Knight, we'll get to that later.

The album opens with a Doggystyle-like introduction, and moves into the first track, "Compose Myself". This track has Kokane doing a hook and Dr. Dre producing it. Snoop totally tears this track up with a blowout performance. "Snoop Dogg (What's My Name Part II)" follows, and is the album's first single, you've probably heard it. It actually gives a nice Bay Area and LBC flavor to it. It's laid-back, and a catchy track, though it isn't on the level of the original. "True Lies" is a classic track produced by Dr. Dre, some of the instruments used on here are mind-blowing. Snoop also gives a nice feel to this track, and Kokane sings the hook nicely. "Wrong Idea" has a nice beat reminiscent of Bad Azz's track with Daz "I Don't Want To Die" stabbing Death Row Records, which will be on Bad's album in January. Ironically enough Bad Azz is featured on the track, and puts in a nice verse, but Snoop steals the show with a really good verse. "Go Away" is a diss to Death Row by Snoop and Kokane, where Snoop talks about how they keep trying to diss him but fail. He hits them pretty hard here, the beat is tight, but the track drags out a little bit. "Set It Off" features Ice Cube, MC Ren, Lady Of Rage and Nate Dogg, produced by Timbaland of all people! But his beat is good and sounds like The D.O.C.'s "Funky Enough". MC Ren puts in a nice verse, Cube is on the hook, Lady Of Rage comes out of nowhere with a good verse, and Nate Dogg's part is hilarious! Snoop also steals the show with a great two verses! "Stacy Adams" is a classic track, it's laid-back and has a party sort of feel, and one of the greatest hooks! Snoop puts in a great performance. "Lay Low" is a huge diss to Death Row Records from Snoop, Butch Cassidy, Tray D, Goldie Loc, Nate Dogg, and others. The beat is great produced by Dre. They rip into Suge, Swoop G, Lil' C-Style, and other Death Row people with some hard diss lines! Tray D references to Suge as well, showing The Eastsidaz can stand up to The Row, Master P even sounds good on this track! I almost didn't even recognize him at first! "Everywhere I Go" is also a diss to Death Row Records, called "Issues" here for some reason. The track has a great beat by Meech Wells, and Snoop talks about how Death Row is hating from his views and when they crossed out his name in the issue of The Source magazine on their promotion. "Brake Fluid" is a great sex track and is hilarious, the beat is funny as well. Just a great song. "Ready To Ride" features Eve, and Snoop and her sound good together over a nice piano-laced track. "In Love At Times (Losing Control)" is a classic track featuring Butch Cassidy and Soopafly! This has a classic LBC sound to it, and Soopafly and Snoop show they are a great duo. The beat is bright and the song is about bad girls. On "Leave Me Alone", Snoop actually sings, over a Bay Area-like beat, and it's good for cruising. "You'll Miss Me (Raindrops)" is also a great song, and ends the album out nicely. The beat is more laid-back and slow and the chorus is good.

There is only one track I seriously hope you avoid on this album. It is "Back Up Off Me", which features Master P and Magic. The song is terrible, I'm just disgusted with this song. But everything else is tight! So I recommend this nice Snoop album. Five stars!
