Music reviews of R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The MasterpieceMusic Review: Snoop the Character Rapper Comes Through Rating: 4 Stars
This is the first CD that I have ever gotten by Snoop and I must say that Snoop has definately garnered respect in the rap community. He has been around for over 10 years which is a lifetime in the Hip-Hop scene and he is still relevant. This CD represents Snoop as a character actor/rapper because he exposes so much of himself in different ways throughout the CD. With this, I see why he is an actor because so much of his personality comes through on the many different songs which cannot be said about most performers who have homogeneous releases that may be good but are not really exploratory.
I LOVE TO GIVE yOU LIGHT--Intro produced by the Alchemist, is a strong, Gospel-influenced intro that sets the tone for a pretty good CD. Unlike some other CD's that have useless intros, this one actually says something. It contains a sample of "I COME THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE LIFE" written by Gospel great Andrae Crouch.
BANG OUT--Produced by J.R., this song which features vocals by Jasmin Lopez is a weird follow-up for the Gospel intro. The song presents Snoop in hardcore mode with the gunshots heard in the background. The song sounds more like filler and is one of the weaker tracks on the CD. It is hard to accept Snoop fully in this song especially following the tone-setting Intro. B
DROP IT LIKE IT'S H0T--Featuring Pharrell and produced by Neptunes, this song needs no explanation. Everyone has heard it. It made it to #1 on the charts. I must say that I got tired of this song a long time ago because it was everywhere. But it is a good song. It was something fresh in Hip=Hop when it came out and a new sound for Snoop. A
CAN I GET A FLIC WITCHU-Featuring Bootsy Collins and produced by Josef Leimberg, this song has a very weird, pimp-like vibe to it. The vocals are weird and Bootsy Collins' appearance thoroughly fits the song. The cut is nothing special but it is unique nonetheless with Snoop mocking his popularity. B+
UPS AND DOWNS-Feautring the BEE GEES and produced by Warryn Campbell who has produced some R&B/Gospel cuts for various singers. The song definately has an old school vibe, 70s to it which reminds me of what Snoop is about anyway because he has that persona of a pimp from the 70s. The song has a positive message to it about the ups and downs of life although Snoop starts by cussing but here that hard-core persona fits him and the song. Not bad. A-
THE BIDNESS--Produced by Soopafly, this is true filler. There is nothing special/unique about the song except for the intro which is more interesting than the song itself. The song has Snoop trying to put down the bidness about who he is and what he is about. B
SNOOP D.O. DOUBLE G-Produced by Black Jeruz and Sha Money, this song is nothing special but unlike some of the others the beat/music fits Snoop's delivery as well as what he is talking about does not come across as if he is trying to be "hard." Even though it comes across as filler, it is still a strong album cut. B+
LET'S GET BLOWN-Produced by the Neptunes and featuring Pharrell, this second single is strong. It has that old school vibe to it but also one of those laidback parties during the summer at a bar-be-cue or something like that. The song definately would have benefited from a summer release as it never really took off the ground fully on the singles chart. Snoop comfortably spits on the song and the chorus is tight. A+
STEP YO GAME UP-Featuring Lil Jon and Trina and produced by Lil Jon himself, this is the kinda cut I am talking about. Snoop comes hard but this kinda cut fits him. Lil Jon's production though it commonly seems the same is good on this song and he adds to the energy of the song as Trina does. This would make it a good video and is more commercial than some of the other cuts. This definately is not filler. A
PERFECT-Featuring Charlie Wilson and produced by the Neptunes, of all the cuts that the Neptunes produce for the CD this is probably the weakest. There is nothing special. Charlie Wilson's vocals fit the song and the beat is a kind of boring, 70's old school vibe. After hearing this on a couple of the other cuts, it is tiring although the topic of the cut about a girl being perfect is positive. B+
FRESH PAIR OF PANTIES ON-Produced by Ole Folks and featuring vocals by J. Black (who sounds like one of the singers from Jagged Edge a little), this song is a nice little, freaky cut that fits Snoop well. The laidback, arrangement is on-point and the song does not come across as simple filler but a song that is talking about something. A
PROMISE I--Produced by Mr. Porter and featuring vocals by Treasure, this neo-soul groove sounds "hot." I could see this cut getting some play on Urban outlets. The vocals are hot and Snoop is comfortable here rapping about promising to be there for his girl. This is one of the better cuts on the CD and it could be an actual neo-soul/R&B song which is cool cuz Snoop comes across as a neo-soul rapper on many of the cuts on this CD. A
OH NO--Feautring 50 Cent and produced by Ron Browz, this song is kinda hardcore but works better than the others of its sort probably because the beat agrees more with Snoop's low-key and more quiet delivery and because 50 Cent is present on the CD giving the song a little more credibility. A-
CAN u CONTROL yO HOE--Featuring Soopafly and produced by L.T. Hutton, this song is truly unnecessary. I know that Snoop is "the pimp" but the song's message of slapping a girl and keepign her in check is not cool at all. The song is hot but it is also weak at the same time. The arrangement is much better but the message is something I cannot fully get pass. C+
SIGNS--Featuring Charlie Wilson and Justin Timberlake and produced by the Neptunes. This cut is hot. Charlie Wilson and Justin Timberlake add much to this 1970's meets 21st century beat. Snoop's flow is on fire and I am surprised that Justin cussed. The song is the current single with an accompanying video which is also hot. The song is more positive about trying to figure out the "signs" of who a girl likes. A+
I'M THREW WITCHU--Featuring Soopafly and prodeuced by Warryn Campbell, the song is talking about being through with a girl just letting go but in Snoop's hardcore way. The song coulda worked better as a love song or on a more positive note becuase the arrangement would complement that kind of song better but the song is still "hot" and unique although the b**** word is used too much. A-
PASS IT PASS IT--Produced by the Neptunes, this has the Neptunes beat, the weed allusions and is kinda hot. It could actually be a good club song. A
GIRL LIKE u--Feautring Nelly and produced by L.T.HUTTOn, this is the reason why I bought the CD. I heard this on the radio where it made some ends at Urban outlets. The song is "hot." Nelly and Snoop have real good chemistry and it is one of those mid-tempo rap songs about feeling a girl. The song is worth buying the CD in itself because it is just fire. A+
NO THANG ON ME--Featuring Bootsy Collins and produced by Hi-Tek, this cut is a laidback, smooth cut that is a good close-out to the whole CD with the vocals by Bootsy and the 70s vibe. A-
Overall, the CD is fresh. The weaknesses come through when Snoop brings in all the hardcore in some songs where it seems forced or contrived but the CD as a whole is really commercial and this has been shown in its commercial success both album-wise and singles-wise. It is a nice Hip-Hop cut in this scene where alot of rap CD's sound just like each other and where everything on the CD sounds alike. The other weakenss is that it runs long but hey it's Snoop, one of rap's vets. He has paid his dues. A nice addition to anyone's collection.

Description of R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece"DROP IT LIKE IT'S HOT," the lead single and video from R&G RHYTHM & GANGSTA: THE MASTERPIECE was produced by the Grammy Award winning production duo of The Neptunes and features Pharrell. Snoop teams up with The Neptunes on multiple tracks on R&G, and continues to maximize his chemistry with them as displayed on his recent hit "Beautiful." Considering that most Golden Era rap talents birthed by Dr. Dre have ridden off into the sunset--or are simply much less active and relevant in 2004--it's somewhat surprising that Snoop keeps churning out the hits like it was 1993. Make no mistake, Snoop's raps are still very much gangsta, as the title of the disc implies and as "Bang Out" clearly outlines. They're just a bit more adult-contemporary gangsta now. Despite the heavy pro-pimp overtones, the Doggfather's smoothed-out timbre and flow mask the harshness of his regressive views. The exceptional production throughout is highlighted by the Neptunes' contributions, from the catchy, minimalist "Drop It Like It's Hot" all the way to the '80s retro-funk jam "Let's Get Blown." Steady vocal contributions from funk stalwart Charlie Wilson (Gap Band) and 50 Cent, and nasty beats supplied by everyone from the Alchemist to Hi-Tek put this one over the top. --Dalton Higgins
