Music reviews of Peep Show

Music Review: A fantastic surprise
Rating: 5 Stars

In the old days, awareness of a band was largely dependant of word of mouth, radio singles and videos or just the random attendance/being dragged to a concert and discovering somebody that gets you feel like a fan immediately. However, what if they've been around for years and you're just now getting into them? Feels daunting to start at the bottom, doesn't it? Well I first got onto Siouxsie and the Banshees not through an oldie video or radio station...but rather Rock Band. 3 songs from the band, including one featured on this album are available for download and after looking at videos online of people playing, the music became just as much the highlight as watching other people. Just a shame they've been around over 30 years and I finally get into them.

Peek-a-Boo: Musically it's the most standout of the bunch because it's so out there, from horns, what sounds like accordians and even xylophones. But it's also bouncy, catchy and a toe tapper. Grabs your attention but might be the oddball in terms of the rest of the album. I like that weird drum beat during the bridge. 8.5/10

The Killing Jar: One of my favorites off the record and one of the 3 Rock Band tracks (the others being "Hong Kong Garden" and "Kiss Them For Me"). Great lively drum beat, the vocal performance and the strangeness of the lyrics made this a repeated-often track. 9.5/10

Scarecrow: Starts very quietly and almost ominously, with some strange echo effects and swirling noises before it turns into a huge rocker with a cool galloping rhythm. Siouxsie's vocals are pretty good in the song and turns into a big crescendo. A good song, but not really one I return to. 8/10

Carousel: A softer track and a bit stranger than the last few songs and seems like a really interesting song to listen to but I don't find it much of an actual song or something that pulls me back after I've listened. Only thing that saves it is when the full band comes in when there's barely a minute left and livens it up. 7/10

Burn-Up: A psychotic country song if I ever heard one. Harmonica and basic instruments start before things start to speed up before it becomes an big freak out, especially at the end and Siouxsie stretches those pipes for that "oh-oh-oh-ohhhhhhh!" hook which I dare you not to try everytime she does it. It might feel a bit repetitive but the infectious melody is too hard to ignore. 9/10

Ornaments of Gold: Has a nice energy to it with some Middle Eastern melodies and thumping percussion and the chorus has a nice interplay with different Siouxsie vocals but it's like Scarecrow where I might not return to it much but I like when it's on. 7/10

Turn to Stone: I quite like this one. Some gentle guitar strums and nice wailing on Siouxsie's part and even a small synth riff hidden way in the background makes it stand out. I like her more seductive vocals on this one and though it's not really one of the best on the album, it's a good listen. 8/10

Rawhead and Bloodybones: I got to tell you, I don't like this one. The strange noises, the pinging, that weird melody playing through it and not to mention Siouxsie's distorted and echo-y vocals, it's surely a complex listen. Personally I'm not a big fan of it and I would've left it off. 5/10

The Last Beat of My Heart: Tied for best song to me along with the Killing Jar. It's incredibly minimalist, the synth isn't very complicated and added bits are understated but what sells it completely is Siouxsie's vocals which show an almost naked vulnerability, a longing. A definite listen if you listen to the record. 9.5/10

Rhapsody: Siouxsie shows her versatile range on the record which went from big wailing to pop and soft vocalizing and now she adds a near operatic voice in this epic closer. Palm-muted guitars, steadily increasing pace and added elements and helps make the track a crescendo in and of itself. Another track to look forward to. 9/10

My first exposure to the band was Hong Kong Garden, a weirdly catchy but above-all-else, really quirky so listening to songs that actually have substance was a nice surprise. But seeing how great this record was kind of caught me off guard. It makes a good introduction to the band and it's a cool album anyway though there's a couple of "good, not great" tracks.
