Music Review: Another Good Showing By Simply Red

Though the band has never had a bad album and presumably never will, a covers album had to be in their midst. When you have been a group for 20 odd years it has to be done. The difference here is that the idea of a covers album is now something innovative. These days anyone can do a covers album. Simply Red's difference is that they've decided to cover their own songs. Stroke of genius? For the most part. It's cool to hear some of these tracks in a different way. That said you do still run into just a few clunkers. First and foremost...Mick decided to redo my favorite Simply Red song...Fairground...All I have to say is Uh Oh. To turn it into a tepid dragging torch song...kind of kills the majesty of the original. I loved the song because of the thumping jungle beat and the soulful keyboard fills. Also missing from this version is the scorching chorus now only a single ember from a tea light. I can forgive this one travesty. Also annoying is the nearly soundalike More. It was good originally why redo it and have it sound nearly the same? Same goes for Sad Old Red, which is still a great song but this one is missing the same menacing quality of the earlier version. Mick was kind of a weirdo when Picture Book came out. Did anyone notice the grunting and monster noises on the Classic "No Direction." Finally one more thing about the album was it could've been longer. Granted these days CD Age projects from the earlier 90's where artists took advantage of the length of a CD are now spent, but some albums you just wish would be longer. This is one of them. Another let down seeing as Toni Braxton's exquisite Libra is only a scant 40 minutes exactly. Enough comparison.
What's Good about Simplified?
A lot. The band old and new has united for a singular tight band sound. The new tracks particularly Perfect Love showcase why Hucknall is an amazing writer. Though the latin sound went out in 1999 the track is still funky and innovative. The cuban singer is a nice touch and once more puts to rest that ridiculous rumor that Mick is gay. Get over guys, you can't have him. The other songs are good in a stripped down setting. The flamenco version of Something Got me Started is great too. All in all this is a good album by a group that has yet to dissappoint fully. Get this if you're a fan, get this if you're just starting out...Just get it.
