Music Review: Jews come of age

There was something engagingly casual about the Silver Jews' early albums which spanned a decade of barely constructed music wrapped around solipsistic lyrics. The effect was fun, but the music was scarcely worth replaying more than once or twice unless your irony receptors were turned out.
This time out, it seems that someone actually cares about how things sound.The band may consist of actual musicians and the lyrics now engage us on a both a narrative and allegorical level. The comparisons to Leonard Cohen (which always seemed far-fetched to me) are more apt and it will be interesting to see where they go from here.
