Music Review: Gateway to Sigur Ros

I have a confession. I am a Sigur Ros fanatic. Don't expect an "objective" review, whatever that might be. I love music, all kinds of it, and much Sigur Ros's music ranks among my favorite music-- Period. I first got hooked on Sigur Ros shortly after their breakthrough album, Agaetis Byrtun, was released several years ago. This album, Takk, is beautiful and probably more accessible than some of their previous work. The music is ambient, hauting, and utterly unique. It is also music that is undeniably Icelandic, yet so much more. I concur with another reviewer, who noted that with Sigur Ros, you either get it or you don't. In any event, Takk is a beautiful album that is perhaps slightly more accessible than albums like its predecessor, ( ).
You owe it to yourself to give Sigur Ros a try . . .

Just when this Icelandic crew seemed stuck in loud/soft/loud/ soft rut a la Mogwai or Godspeed You Black Emperor, they release their most beguiling, subtle and beautiful album yet. This album, allegedly the group's first sung in Icelandic rather than their own made-up "Hopelandic" (not that this listener could tell the difference) is relentlessly joyous, unaffectedly rad and inventive but never just for its own sake. Strings hold an ever more prominent place in the music, and this is a good thing. Songs unfold slowly as usual, but they take unexpected turns as often as not. The brilliant "Gl?s?li" burbles with as much melodic invention and anything by their fellow Icelanders Mum.
