Music reviews of Tri-Polar

Music Review: One of the best mainstream rock records I've heard in a while!
Rating: 5 Stars

I like all kinds of rock music, both mainstream stuff and the less popular. Over the last decade, I've been buying and enjoying all the albums from the big bands like Staind, Godsmack, Creed, Incubus, Nickelback, Puddle Of Mudd, Hoobastank, Linkin Park, Korn, Foo Fighters, Seether, Breaking Benjamin, the list goes on. The only problem is that mainstream rock is really starting to all sound the same, mostly because even the newest bands are just clones of the older ones. Then I bought Tri-Polar from Sick Puppies, and it was a breath of fresh air. The funny thing is that there isn't anything on this album that hasn't been done before, but Sick Puppies have the enthusiasm and catchy hooks that make them stand out. Even better yet, you get a little bit of everything on this record. There's heavy stuff, mellow stuff, angry stuff, fun stuff...It's a nice variety, and this is the first album I've bought in a while where the songs didn't all blur together, they stand well on their own.

On the first album from Sick Puppies (Dressed Up As Life), the group's sound could best be described as something similar to early Hoobastank, and it was a great record. But on this album, the pups do what any great band does on their 2nd album; they broaden their style and push themselves into a much stronger sound. The opening song, War, instantly kicks things into gear and sounds like Korn doing a rock version of Smack My B*tch Up by Prodigy. I Hate You is a cool follow up with a driving chorus that could pass for Linkin Park. Riptide is a less agressive but equally catchy tune that would've made a great upbeat song for the radio. Then we have the band's big hit, You're Going Down, an instantly catchy and moody song with driving guitars, bass and drums. I'm sure this song shocked a lot of the band's earlier fans when they first heard it. Odd One has a mellow verse but explodes into a catchy chorus that would make a great sing-along in concert. So What I Lied is a favorite of mine with its emotional lyrics and head banging chorus. Survive is a lot of fun, it sounds much more like something from the band's first album. Should've Known Better reminds me of Filter at first, and you gotta love it for its groovy bass line and guitar solo. Maybe is the newest single, and at first it could pass for Christian rock but less cheesy, but by the chorus it errupts into a great radio anthem. Don't Walk Away is another ballad that could possibly pass for something from the last album. Master Of The Universe starts with a phat bass line, and kicks into an aggressive but upbeat chorus. In It For Life sounds like Hoobastank during the verse and then like Linkin Park in the chorus. The album ends with White Balloons, a touching anthem where both Shimon and Emma sing, and it eventually builds to an epic climax.

I know I compared Sick Puppies to a lot of other bands, but don't let that give the impression that they're just mainstream clones. You might hear an influence from bands like Korn, Linkin Park, Silverchair, or whoever else, but all the variety is what makes this album great. They aren't reinventing the wheel, they're just giving you some of the best parts. It's nice to hear an album again where every song is memorable, and even though this album has only spawned one big hit so far, there's at least five more on here. This is a perfect mainstream rock record.
