Music reviews of First Love Last RitesMusic Review: Avant-Garde Retro
The post-punk, musicians-as-artists, group Shudder to Think have again presented a project that keeps them from easily being classified or humbly approached by waywarded altrock kids. STT bring together some of the most talented and original voices in rock music today, while managing to craft for each voice a song that wholly complements it. Jeff Buckley appears on the gem "I want someone badly" (certainly to make his female fans swoon), Liz Phair provides her vocals for the tongue-in-cheek "Erecting a movie star", and Billy Corgan throws his high-pitched voice into the album's only punk song "When I was born, I was bored". Now these three are the "big names" that appear with STT, however the best tracks on the album are those with lesser know friends. "Automatic Soup" gives us a glimpse of STT doing their best Spent Poets impersonation. Lena Karlsson sings "The Wedding is Over" as though Dion Warwick was there listening in herself. "Just really want to see you" provides us with humour and Alan Sparhawk sounding like a 90's Neil Diamond. And I defy anyone who would dare claim that Nina Persson's vocals on "Appalachian Lullaby" aren't haunting and beautiful. All in all Shudder to Think has put together a soundtrack that reinvents the teen rock of the 50's & 60's. If there's going to be a band that re-presents the music of those decades it should be STT. They pull it off without sounding like retro-posers or art-f**s on parade.
