Music Review: wonderful songs by Shirley Bassey

Shirley Bassey - The Greatest Hits gives us a good number of hits by Shirley Bassey and her ability to belt out a tune never ceases to amaze me. Shirley also knows how to use her voice, a finely tuned instrument, to convey the emotions of any song; and that's a very special gift. The quality of the sound on this CD is excellent and the artwork is very nicely done indeed.
"Diamonds Are Forever" comes from the James Bond movie of the same name; and Shirley sings this with all her heart and soul. The percussion and the brass make the music sound so good. Shirley's excellent diction makes her singing even better; she's a pro. Indeed, when you hear her sing you listen closely--she's always THAT good. "History Repeating" has quite an arrangement. Shirley successfully tackles "History Repeating" despite those complicated key modulations that would scare away everyone except the most confident of vocalists--and Shirley is definitely a bold vocalist. "History Repeating" is performed by The Propellerheads and Shirley Bassey; I am not too familiar with the work of The Propellerheads but they add a great effect to this number. There's also "Big Spender." I heard this for the first time listening to a Peggy Lee album; Shirley Bassey puts her own stamp on this number with her incredible sense of timing and she succeeds at making "Big Spender" her own in that regard. "Big Spender" is also strong on the brass and drums to create a great effect.
"For All We Know" gets the royal treatment from Shirley as she sings this Carpenters song. Karen and Richard Carpenter must have been proud if they ever heard this. The musical arrangement lacks nothing--it's very well done. "Light My Fire" is a cover of a song by The Doors; Shirley sings this with great passion and even some sensitivity. I really like "Light My Fire." "(Where Do I Begin) Love Story" showcases Shirley squarely front and center--and that's OK with me! "(Where Do I Begin) Love Story" is easily a major highlight of this album. In addition, the strings enhance the natural beauty of "(Where Do I Begin) Love Story." "What Now My Love" shines like silver and gold when Shirley sings it; the operatic qualities of her voice come through very clearly on this track and I'm impressed.
"Goldfinger" was another big, big hit for Shirley Bassey; this song with that brass and the strings comes from another James Bond movie of the same name. The song helped to set the tone for the movie while keeping Shirley in her spotlight whenever she sings this tune. The brass enhances the musical arrangement and that's grand. "Goldfinger" also appears on this album as a "Propellerheads Mix;" the percussion and keyboard work to make this mix strong and very good for dancing!
The album ends strong with another bonus track; this time we get a "Wild Oscar Mix" of "Big Spender" which, despite its `70s flavor, remains good for dancing even in our times. Shirley belts out this rendition of "Big Spender" like the best of the belters ever could and it all holds its own very well. What a strong ending for this CD!
Overall, Shirley Bassey fans will want this for their collections. There are quite a few cover songs here and that proves Shirley can sing her a cover every bit as good as she can sing her own songs including "Goldfinger." I highly recommend this album
