Music Review: Favorite CD from the Utena Series

Someone mentrioned in another review they found this Soundtrack to be jarring. Both previews reviews also mention "Toki ni Ai wa" as one of the highlights for the CD. Ironically that song is one of my least favorite tracks. The music of Utena has been usually a combination of bizarre, upbeat, dark, and dramatic, and I think this album probably leans more towards dark and dramatic, which is why most people won't like it as much. There are also less songs, since the ending song had to be made instrumental for the soundtrack due to licensing reasons.
The two dueling songs in this album sound very polished compared to their original versions (found in another soundtrack not released in the US) and are my favorite tracks from the album, expecially "Naked Rose - Carnage - Constellations Galaxy..."
From the instrumental tracks, my favorites include "Illusion - Malice's Pupa" "Belladonna's Snare" "The Rose Signet - Sky Garden's Bride" and "Decisive Battle - Bezelbub's Royal Castle".
Since the instrumental tracks were created spcifically for the movie, and not as "stock" tracks, they are very specific in evoking the emoting for a particular scene.
For example, "Decisive Battle - Bezelbub's Royal Castle" and "A Round Dance - Revolution - Adolescence Rush" are played in the movie back to back in order to build up tension and keep the spectator on the edge of their seat until the end of the movie.
If you are a fan of TV's Utena's more dark tracks, this is a must-have.
If you are more of a fan of the Utena vocal tracks, you might not find it as appealing.
