Music Review: Sheryl delivers the goods...again

Often much harder-edged than her previous recordings, "The Globe Sessions" finds Sheryl writing more personal, first-person lyrics. The achingly gorgeous "The Difficult Kind" is a frank plea for understanding from someone who love has burned more than once, and the country-tinged "It Don't Hurt" is a slightly-in-denial narrative about (almost) getting over someone and moving on with your life. Then there's the smash hit "My Favorite Mistake," which ponders the relationship that hurt like hell but was still worthwhile. (One can only wonder which songs were inspired by Eric Clapton or another beau.)

As if her frankness replacing her standard tall tales about colorful characters wasn't surprising enough, the stunning "Am I Getting Through (Parts I & II)," at the dead center of the album, rocks harder than any previous Crow recording, with Part II pushing the envelope even further. "Maybe That's Something" is another gritty workout, but her balladry is also taken to new heights here, from the folkish, poignant "Riverwide" to the moving "Crash and Burn." Furthermore she serves up a Bob Dylan leftover (unreleased from his last album, sent to Sheryl personally) with the fabulous "Mississippi."

So are there any wild and reckless rockers with off-center lyrics like we've come to expect from her? Never fear, "There Goes the Neighborhood" and "Members Only" will no doubt find their way to blaring speakers in taverns and poolhalls, and the former is even one of her most fun songs to date. In fact, on the whole album, only "Anything But Down" is lukewarm and less than spectacular. "The Globe Sessions" finds Sheryl Crow once again finding new twists and turns in her already impressive artistic path.
