Music Review: A rare folk great

This is some badass folk, and I mean badass in the most human, descriptive, and it's-the-only-word-that-fits way (Amazon if you're reading this, hear my plea and read through before rejecting it outright).
What does that mean? Well, listen to Suicide Alley. Or Get Out of This House, or 84,000 Different Delusions, and almost every track on this album - I mean, this is a girl at her *core*; pissed, confused, angry, and wanting it all out in the open with no pretense, no shyness, and using all the emotional capabilities of music itself to do it. She's out there, she's in-your-face, and she's not backing down. Badass! Other people have described this album as "mellow" - it may sound like it in some places, but there's a tension and a confidence to it that puts "mellow" out of the description for me entirely. At some points it verges on the feeling of rap music, and some of that rawness and passion and anger. If you're really listening, this ain't mellow at all - this is a woman singing the full spectrum.
And then in the middle of that, she throws "If I Were Brave" in. I mean, lock me up with that song alone and throw away the key, because it is absolutely incredible. Never has there been so much emotion encapsulated in one song, on one incredible recording, with that real a 'sigh' right there in it - she wasn't recording this, she was living it and a microphone happened to be there to hear it unfold.
This album truly is a masterpiece, possibly Colvin's last one. The whole thing is just so focused and coherent and all around such human themes expressed in such an honest, beautiful way. Truly artistic and a joy to listen to. This is on my all-time top 10 albums list for sure. If you're a fan of music at all, and especially if you enjoy any kind of folk or even modern indie, don't miss this.
