Music reviews of She Wolf

Music Review: Shakira "Did It Again" -- A Strong Album, Despite Repetition of Tracks
Rating: 4 Stars

Fans of early Shakira albums have heavily criticized her latest offering as a weak attempt to capitalize on the current dancehall trend. For them, the uptempo nature of the tracks presented here appear as if Shakira has stopped being true to herself for the sake of commerciality. However, a closer look at the lyrics reveals the signature style fans have come to know and love. It seems as though Shakira took her signature writing style and backed it with more electronic beats instead of her typical rock. While few tracks here are as instantly powerful as some of her earlier material, her third offering is just as enjoyable as her earlier English works.

Lead single "She Wolf" starts the album off firmly in electropop territory, setting the stage for a dancehall-heavy album. Luckily, Shakira proves herself more than capable of pulling it off. The track features her signature lyrical style, even impressively managing to incorporate "lycanthropy" the track. Aside from some fans complaining that the howls can get annoying, it is a very addictive track and a wise choice for lead single. "Did It Again" is inexplicably considered one of the weaker tracks on the album, despite being a personal favourite. Here, Shakira sings about repeatedly having the wrong taste in men, even including a married man ("How blind a girl can be/to miss you hide your ring"). Lyrically, this is one of the songs with the most substance and is almost reminiscent of material off her Laundry Service album. "Long Time" is a track that seems to have incredible potential that it never quite lives up to. It passes by as an enjoyable listen and a solid track overall, but doesn't capture much attention either. There is nothing wrong with the track per se, it just fails to stand out.

"Why Wait", on the other hand, quickly asserts itself as one of the stronger offerings. The production, one of many tracks handled by Pharrell Williams, is some of the most interesting that the album has to offer. This is one of the tracks that seem most like what one would expect of a Shakira album, with its Middle Eastern influences. Shakira's vocal delivery is confident and works to really sell the song. "Good Stuff" carries on in similar vein with the exotic influences, and the chorus is particularly strong. Like "Long Time", it fails to really establish itself as one of the most memorable available tracks but it provides solid album filler. "Men In This Town" starts out strong and remains that way through the verses, with Shakira on a search for a good man. It struggles, however, on the chorus when her vocals come across oddly strained, almost sound off-key in places. It degrades even further with parts such as "it's a suicide..." and the whole "fresh, I'm so fresh and so clean..." just sounding completely unrelated to the rest of the song. It's really a shame, because had it been more cohesive, it easily could have been one of the strongest tracks. Luckily, the verses are strong enough on their own to keep it enjoyable.

"Gypsy" is a fan favourite, although it comes across a little odd as one of the only mellow tracks in an otherwise dance-heavy album. It does make a nice change of pace, and is another track reminiscent of Shakira's earlier material. She here proves that she can pull off more folk-y music just as well as uptempos, although this is far from her best work. "Spy", on the other hand, proves once more why Shakira and Wyclef Jean need to keep up their chemistry. After the excellent "Hips Don't Lie", the two pair up again here to craft easily the strongest track this album has to offer. It's a creative track, everything from its lyricism to Shakira's trumpet-imitating vocals (listen to the track to understand). Her vocals on the rest of the track are some of the strongest on the album, and the slick production accentuates them beautifully. "Mon Amour" is another personal favourite, and is definitely comparable to "Don't Bother" and "Objection". Shakira is generally at her best when playing the scorned lover, as this is when we tend to get some of her strongest, and most sarcastic, lyrics. Here Shakira sings about hoping her ex and his new girlfriend have a miserable time in France as revenge for breaking her heart. It doesn't sound like much on paper, but the delivery works impeccably.

Fans of Shakira's Spanish material will also enjoy the second half of her album, where she offers Spanish versions of several of the album tracks. "Loba" ("She Wolf"), "Lo Hecho Esta Hecho" ("Did It Again"), and "Anos Luz" ("Why Wait") are all just as strong as their English versions, perhaps even more so because Shakira still seems most comfortable singing in her native language. For the casual and English-speaking fan, these tracks may come across as unnecessarily repetitive, however some may enjoy the opportunity to hear familiar tracks sung a different way. One of the most unexpected gems is the Timbaland-assisted "Give it Up to Me", another track which many fans were quick to dismiss since it is different from what most would expect from Shakira. However, this song only goes on to show her talent at taking diverse styles of material and making it her own. While this track is clearly more urban than anything else the album offers, it never sounds out of place alongside the others. The remix of "Did It Again" with Kid Cudi is another decent version, but it was not really strong enough to merit inclusion. The original incarnation was fine on it's own. Shakira then ends things off with live versions of "Gypsy" and "She wolf", neither of which are terribly different from their original forms, rendering the end of the album quite repetitive.

Overall Mark: 4/5

It seems as though fans object most strongly to the production that Shakira's latest offering uses to back its tracks. Many quickly wrote this album off as another artist to fall to the dance music trend, ignoring the fact that her signature style was stamped all over the tracks. The biggest problems here actually lie in the limited amount of English material, with only a sparse 10 distinct English tracks. This leads to Shakira attempting to supplement and pad out the album by including Spanish versions, live versions, and a remix. While these tracks are all good versions, and the Spanish versions are certainly welcome for most fans, it makes the album seem awkwardly repetitive and only serves to emphasize how short it is rather than masking the fact. It's especially puzzling since Shakira's other two English albums were quite short as well, 13 (11, if you only include English tracks) and 12 songs each. It would thus appear that adding extras were to give the illusion of giving more value for the money, but the average fan will probably not be fooled. Nonetheless, the album does stand together as a cohesive offering and an enjoyable listen, repetition and all.

Description of She Wolf

Shakira's brand new English album She Wolf is an uptempo pop album. It is all about synthesizers and electronical concepts, all mixed with the world sounds that we are used to from Shakira, sounds from countries like India, the Middle East and her home country of Colombia. She Wolf features a predominantly English track list with a follow up album of new and unique repertoire in Spanish to come in 2010. The title track "She-Wolf"; boasts the infectious and energizing sound that made Shakira a household name, with a slightly more dancey/ electronic beat (about 125 beats per minute). Though most tracks on the upcoming album will be in English, Shakira chose to service the Spanish version of the first single, "Loba," two weeks before the English single is launched.
