Showing typical music-industry logic since BMG bought the label, this equally advertises Shadowfax's four Windham Hill albums, and none of their non-WH albums. The songs selected are largely the most "essential" from each of those albums, ignoring the fact that the first WH album isn't stylistically a real Shadowfax album, and then choosing songs from the 3rd and 4th albums which do not stray from the stylistic center established by the second album.
For a general overview, this is a fair if not very adventurous sampling; about half are indeed among their best, the rest very good to some just OK. What's missing here? "Ariki" is more interesting from the first album than "Vajra" or "Angel's Flight"; "Song For My Brother" and "Watercourse Way" from SHADOWDANCE are more adventurous, "The Big Song" and "Above the Wailing Wall" from DREAMS OF CHILDREN are more dramatic, and "Ritual" and "Maceo" (among others) from TOO FAR TO WHISPER are more diverse -- and all of them age better than those two (or "Shaman Song", which strangely appears on both Shadowfax anthologies).
Therefore the three-star rating: it's decent music, it's a fair if somewhat tepid representation of the band, and it's hampered somewhat by being industry-driven. If you want Shadowfax at its New-Agey-ist, then get the first album. If you want them at their greatest breadth into progressive-rock & world music, you want the second album SHADOWDANCE (best represented in this collection). If you want them at their most cutting-edge into pop/fusion/world/whatever, THE DREAMS OF CHILDREN. And TOO FAR TO WHISPER is the most accessible, the culmination of what DREAMS dared to step into. If you want all that superficially (while still hitting all the most radio-friendly bits), here is your disc.
