Music Reviews of Seussical [2000 Original Broadway Cast]Music Review: Underrated! Rating: 5 Stars
Maybe the kiddie premise of this show turned critics off, but I just am in love with the music. Even though the show is dominated by animals, I think people, especially women, can relate to the obstacles in the show. (For example, Gertrude McFuzz gets a bigger tail to gain Horton's attention, Mayzie LaBird ends up with an egg after her fling "flies the coop" lol) Musical styles range from latin to pop to r&b to traditional broadway ballads. The highlights of the show include beautiful "Notice Me, Horton" and vibrant layered "Solla Sollew". As with most Broadway shows, you may have to give it a few listens to appreciate it. Still, don't turn a deaf ear to this CD, it's wonderful in it's own right!
Music Review: fun! fun!f fun! Rating: 5 Stars
I purchased this cd after I had seen a youth theatre production of Seussical with my daughters, who are 6 and 4. Both of my daughters listen to it in the car and in their room. For my youngest daughter's birthday, we took her to see another production at Cal State Fullerton at the end of October. She sang every word of every song and afterwards we were fortunate to get pictures with most of the cast. It was so great to see her smile with Horton, Mayzie, Gertrude and the Sour Kangaroo. During the show, people would turn around and smile as they noticed her excitement with the entire production. She has created a few more fans for Seussical and we are looking forward to the next time we can see it!
Music Review: You don't need a plot for a great soundtrack Rating: 4 Stars
While Seussical the Musical has received mixed reviews on Broadway, and the shortcomings of plot have almost certainly doomed the show itself from a significant long-term run, that has entirely no effect on the music. The music proves to be the highlight of the show, and I'm sure that at least half of the people who saw the show since its launch late last year would jump at the chance to buy this CD and relive the music. The foot-tapping rock-like beat and catchy, definitely Seuss-y lyrics make for a wonderful listening experience and even if you aren't familiar with the plot behind them, you can certainly appreciate some of the humor and messages in these lyrics. Enjoy!
Music Review: See the right production Rating: 4 Stars
I have been hearing this CD for the past few months as my step-son prepped for the roll of Horton. I must admit that I was enchanted by some songs, and left flat with others, and had concerns with how the production would play out. I really didn't care for the Cat on the CD, but our Cat was amazing. Some of it is seeing the production and how the director interprets the musical. The songs are good - they have a "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" quality in variety - but I also know alot of people don't care for that one either but like the repetition of "Phantom..." much more. Oh well...Bottom line - great family listen, and great family show.
Music Review: Wonderful Music for a wonderful Musical !!!! Rating: 5 Stars
I was a guitar player in the band for a community theater production of this wonderful musical. The CD was vitally important for my practice of the music. Since the Musical itself is an "operetta", the majority of the show is captured on the CD. Buy the CD simply to enjoy the fantastic Seuss imagination and stories. The music itself is a wide variety of styles from ragtime to rock. The actors are fabulous and the singing is perfect. If you are a fan of Dr. Seuss, this CD is a must! And if you ever get a chance to see the stage production, even at the local community level, I encourage you to go! Your heart will be uplifted and you'll laugh a lot!
