Music Review: Really Good. Bordering On Great, But Just Not There...

Let me start by saying that I understand why a lot of fans are frustrated with this album, with the direction it took, and the truth of it is that even if you are a HUGE fan you won't always like what an artist does all of the time, every time. It's not because "They don't get it" or "It hasn't grown on them". Sometimes the style and sound just won't appeal to them and as with this album, which is a depature from the norm for most rock and metal fans, is the case. An argument could also be made that just because an artist can be this creative, doesn't mean that they should be. That is not the case here though. While it pushes the limits this album was the right choice.
That being said I love this album. It is rare that an artist steps this far and this aggresively into the Prog rock genre and do it so brilliantly. What most people don't understand is that this album actually makes perfect sense for Serj. Yes, he sings for one of the best Alt Metal bands of all time, and he is damn good at it. But at heart he is (or makes one hell of a case for being) an Art & Progressive (Prog) musician. And if you go back and listen to his early work with SOAD or even on Elect The Dead, you could definately see this in him. His music has always been rich and layed, combining sounds and structures that are not the norm to create harmonies that fill the senses. This time he just happened to choose to do it with more symphony and less metal. And I'm not saying that to imply that the lack of metal is what turns some listeners off, it was just to point out that the medium is a definate departure from the norm.
Despite the fact that I've given this album 5 stars, because it is that good, (it would probably be more accurate to give it 4.5 stars because some of the production does deter from the album) the sheer number of rich and overlaping sounds and rythems coupled with Serj's vocals can seem a bit overwhelming, and even disjointed at times in its sheer amount of sensory imput. I will admit that the first listen I gave the whole album I was like "what the hell, Serj? Really?..." But by the end of the second or third listen through I knew I was in love. Is the album perfect? No, it's not. And it definately won't be for everyone. A case for those people could be made that this album was was only created for one person, being the composer, and sometimes this type of obvious self indulgence shouldn't be shared. But it was, and I for one am glad it was. For me (a life long, die hard rock and metal fan) it is a brilliant and dareing vision that translated beautifully into sound.
Description of Imperfect Harmonies
'Imperfect Harmonies' has shaped up to be as powerful and musically eclectic as its predecessor. Once again, Tankian's album takes a multi-themed approach to the lyrics, which he describes as addressing the political, environmental, social, and personal.'Elect the Dead' is essentially a rock record with progressive melodic elements. 'Imperfect Harmonies' could be classified as rock because it is punchy with many peaks throughout, but the instrumentation is somewhat different. Though there are live drums, bass, and some guitars, the driving aspects are electronic and orchestral. It's quite unique in its sound palette. This is, in essence, music that has sat in the vat and matured to a ripe sensation and is now ready to serve... The majority of the songs have this huge wall of sound presented in a way I've never heard before. It's not common to have a song that is both electronic and orchestral since one is synthetic and the other organic, but I found a way of meshing a lot of these colors together... My intentions have always been to make music that is creative, quality, and moving. I have never learned the static method of repeating myself musically whether in System or now.
