Music Review: Poor little rich boy...

This review applies only to the Second piano concerto as I did not dare going further...

Aside from feeling profound boredom permeating in this performance, it reveals a lazy score analysis and a disregard for motive structure that leads to this soup and even sometimes to disconnect between the orchestra and the soloist. The concerto seems a long winded affair in this recording, hardly a marvel of engineering and a feat of multimiking fantasy that can isolate a flute in a fortissimo. It is the kind of non offensive exercise ideal for the "10 biggest hit of romantic music for lovers" with even some vulgar, heavy breathing during the climax of the first movement.
The second movement quickly draws a yawn: sure the piano accompanies the orchestra in the beginning but somehow, surely the soloist must have something to say when his turn comes. Well, no, he doesn't. He imitates the composer's rendition in a key moment and everyone moves along. Towards the end, since nothing has happened, no dramatic tension been released, one feels he is cruising to some cute unimaginative close. Pedantic and complacent.
The last movement sees more of the same, with those typical, copied from elsewhere, "important note" fakery that is supposed to show he is feeling something. From there the end is near and everyone wakes up to give some noisy fortissimo ending so the last impression cancels the musical no man's land this listener felt he was drifting for what seemed an eternity.
Lugansky represents the epitome of academic boredom, a pretty face with a romantic yearning marketed ad infinitum. One feel his life has always been wonderful, doors must have opened in front of him and the only frustrations must have been in the order of getting a blue toy car instead of the white one he so vibrantly wanted. He must have thrown a tantrum here and there and the white toy must have quickly materialized. This is at best the depth of narrative his performance elicited. Yawn...
