Rating: 4 Stars

Hailing from South Africa, this quartet may be opening doors to a new Seattle or L.A.-type scene. Is South Africa the new hot bed of Alternative Rock? I don't think so, but listening to this band, you start hoping there might be more where they came from.
Oh boy, has this year picked up recently! This is another excellent record. And, this is another excellent record on the Wind-Up label. This is the label that brings you Creed and Evanescence also! God bless Wind-up records. They just might make this year decent all by themselves!

When you first start listening to this album, you'll think of bands such as Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Godsmack, and Bush. It is this critic's opinion that Seether sounds most like Bush. I hear them being frequently compared to Creed. I don't hear much, if any, similarity. They're both great acts, that's as far as the similarity goes for me. Listen to Bush's "Sixteen Stone"; with songs such as "Everything Zen", "Machine Head", etcetera...this Seether record greatly resembles that Bush sound. This may bother some folks. I don't mind, as long as the artist is passionate and honest to the music. I think the listening public can feel it when an artist is trying to sound like someone they are not. When an artist records something that doesn't come naturally for them, there is a stiff and over compensating sound that usually occurs. That's nowhere to be found here. There is no reason to not enjoy this record, if this is a style of music you can appreciate.
Lead by the hit singles, "Fine Again" and "Driven Under", this record has even more to offer. These singles are great, likeable and very appealing, but listen to "Gasoline" or "Sympathetic" and you'll really be impressed with Seether. Most all of these songs are excellent. This album changes speeds real well also. It takes you down to the depths of despair, gets you tapping your feet, and even has something a bit "dreamy" on it. All these styles seem to be placed perfectly on the album, also.

We get started with "Gasoline." A rocker with a great sleek vocal track. With lyrics such as "Wanna waste her monthly blood, Wanna get some on my love" and "Wanna be the one unclean that she wipes her ass on", it's a bit of a shocker. These lyrics could very easily sound idiotic if not "hidden" in the arrangement perfectly, which they are. This is a fantastic track. Personally, my favorite lyric on this track is "Last night I saw that beauty queen, she's gettin' high on Revlon." Great track.
The rest of the tracks also have a little shock value to them, but nothing extensive. This is not a Marilyn Manson record, don't panic! "69 Tea" is the second track, and it's a moderate rocker. Just a solid track. And, as we move on to the third track we start to get a softer, more "taunting" sound. "Fine Again" is a song with "build up." Starts out slow and steady, and then rises to a strong, harmonic chorus. The news on the website is that this track helped stop a suicide attempt, which the band felt great about and was very proud of. On the next track, "Needles", the band gets a lot heavier. It's a passionate track, with a Godsmack heaviness to it. Just when you think that the next track might get out of control, they slow it down and give you the second single, "Driven Under." A nicely written track with a catchy chorus. So, you get the idea. The record changes speeds well. Just when you think they might fold, they deal you another good song.

The only thing I can say I dislike a bit, is the originality. This is nothing groundbreaking. This is nothing you haven't heard before. There are literally thousands of bands doing this exact style of songwriting, but the key is how well they do it. Seether does what they do very well. My thoughts are like this: I like Alice In Chains. I like Godsmack. I like some Bush stuff. If they can write and perform great songs that are in the same vein...more power to them. I'm still waiting for someone to pick up on the old Def Leppard sound, because they can't seem to do it anymore!

Final thoughts: If you enjoyed Bush's "Sixteen Stone", or just enjoy heavy and, at times, harmonic Alternative Rock music...this record is for you. And, if you go to the Seether website (www.seether.com), you can click on the audio file and hear the entire album online...in it's entirety!!! Enjoy.

Key tracks: "Gasoline"
"Driven Under"
"Sympathetic"
"Fine Again"
"Needles" ...and all the rest!

Description of Disclaimer

Disclaimer [Explicit Lyrics] [Audio CD] Seether
Creed's brand of life-affirming hard rock has done little to lift the spirits of label mates Seether. "It seems like everything is gray and there's no color to behold," the South African trio's frontman Shaun Morgan fumes on "Fine Again." Its debut album is an unrelentingly grim affair, punctuated by self-obsession and angst, grinding riffs, and dragging rhythms. "It seems like I'm alone here, hollow again," Morgan sings on "Sympathetic." But taking a cue from leading miserablists Staind, Seether temper their angst with melody and soul, allowing the sun to break through in sweeping, emotional tracks like "Fade Away" and "Driven Under." Perhaps shifting a couple million units will improve the group's disposition. --Aidin Vaziri
