Music Review: Acoustic emo?

Secondhand Serenade is another case of where the name suggests that you're listening to a full-scale band when really the whole project is run by one person -- in this case, the mastermind is John Vesely. I first heard about him on MTV Hits, and then I went to check out his album Awake.
The reason why I call John's style acoustic emo is because all the songs are indeed acoustic while John's voice seems better suited for pop punk. And he plays only the acoustic guitar throughout the entire album, and the problem with that is, well, if you play only the piano, for example, for a whole album, there are so many different notes that you can play at once so that you're able to easily switch up the rhythm and tone. With an ACOUSTIC guitar, it's not that easy. In other words, this album feels like one long single; the only song that really breaks things up is "Your Call", where some piano is added for a short time.
Also, John spends a great deal of time talking about heartbreak, which is a little obvious by looking at titles like "Broken", "Half Alive" and "End". It's not that the music here is bad; it's that the album as a whole has the kind of drone that might make it hard for casual listeners to indeed stay awake. It's fine for background music, but, well, borrow it first.
