Music Review: Lullabies Soothe Bloodshot Eyes

If you were looking for an extension of a Great Big Sea album, look for their new release GBS X later in the year, just don't look here at Lullabies for Bloodshot Eyes. This is a stripped down, singer/songwriter solo CD from the Shantyman himself. The album is worth it for the collection of lyrics alone; the music, compelling - a thinking man's album. Mr. McCann takes your arm and leads you on a tour through some of his tortured sleepless nights. The funny thing about it is that you find yourself actually looking forward to each next product of his sleepless, bloodshot eyes. "...Free from fear and furrowed brow, awake at break of day." Some are sobering (take that both ways), some sorrowful, some soothing, but all are heartfelt. The eyes may be bloodshot from lack of sleep, but the promise of a new day remains. You may just find Peace Among the Bones or Lazy Lover racing around your head for days. A good beginning for what I hope will be many solo albums to come.
