Music Review: 3.5 stars: beautiful performances and many shining moments, but Walker seems fettered by his soundscapes

In the late 1960s, just as psychadelia was permeating popular music, Scott Walker pursued an entirely different path, idolizing crooners like Jacques Brel and placing layers of strings and backing vocals on top of his straightforward baritone. SCOTT 3, released in 1969, marks the summit of this style.
A few tracks here are memorable. "Two Ragged Soldiers", "Copenhagen" and "Winter Night" represent a soundworld that is solely Scott Walker's, and which attracted its own imitators in the decades to come. Unfortunately, the three Brel covers at the end weaken the album considerably. In listening to "If You Go Away", for example, a translation of Brel's "Ne me quitte pas", I can only regret that Scott Walker tries to be another Brel (an impossible task, for the Belgian was a singular figure himself) when he has his own unique talents.
I worked backwards to SCOTT 3, having discovered Scott Walker through his 2006 avant-garde album THE DRIFT and then gaining much pleasure from SCOTT 4, released later in 1969. Both of those are more successful in that Scott Walker breaks out of his stylistic mold, for SCOTT 4 incorporates elements of psychadelic and THE DRIFT is, well, just completely out there with its violence and terror.
