Music Review: A great deal, but a mixed bag

While it's awfully hard to argue with four disks for $12, and having all of Joplin's piano music in chronological order, I have to agree with many of the other reviewers that these interpretations are mostly lacking.
While Maple Leaf is taken much too fast, many others are played too slowly. (In particular, The Ragtime Dance is taken at such a funereal pace that it loses its entire bouncy, rollicking effect!) And many of Arpin's effects - the speed-ups and slow-downs, trills, odd accents on certain notes within a chord, etc. - are just that, effects, and they don't add much to the emotional impact. I've been listening to this music for 40 years, by Rifkin, Morath, and others... and regarding the pieces that I've heard before, there are only a couple here where I find that Arpin's interpretation is as interesting and/or valid.
Which isn't to say that it's not enjoyable, and it's certainly worth it for a chance to hear some of the more obscure pieces included. But if you don't need four disks worth and just want to hear some of Joplin's best works played with consummate skill and feeling, stick with Joshua Rifkin.
