Music Review: Worst Joplin recording I have ever heard.
Rating: 2 Stars
The only reason I am giving this collection a 2 star rating, is because it is a complete Scott Joplin collection. Not only does it include all of Scott Joplin's rags, waltzes and marches, but it also contains music from "Treemonisha" and Joplin's School of Ragtime piano exercises. I would have preferred to have given this recording a 1.5 star rating, but went with the 2 stars, since Amazon doesn't offer reviewers a half star option in their rating system.
My complaint with this collection has nothing to do with the sound quality, since this is an older recording. My complaint has to do with pianist Richard Zimmerman, who's butchering performance would have been better suited for an amatuer production where the admission would be free to all who would brave to listen to this clown; at least that way, no one would feel like they were cheated the money to hear him play. Zimmerman may think he knows ragtime and how Scott Joplin's music should be played, but his knowledge of both subjects simply do not translate in this performance. He does not give Scott Joplin's music the respect and quality it deserves and I am not referring to his his use of creative expression with the music, but to his playing ability, or lack thereof. His playing is far from superb and is certainly not at the caliber of what one would expect from a commercial recording where one would expect the producers of this label to have hired a better qualified musician for the job. To my ears, his playing style sounds sloppy. When listening closely, I could identify several instances in every piece where I could hear what sounded like wrong notes being played and times when it sounded like he fat fingered the note directly next to the note he meant to play. This happens alot and I highly doubt I am mistaking these moments for the recording being old or the pianist's creative embellishments. I've listened to plenty of old recordings as well as other Joplin collections and none sounded like this. A bad note is a bad note, and a shoddy piano player is a shoddy piano player. I don't know if the problem was that Zimmerman's hands and fingers are too large for the piano keyboard, or if his technique is lacking; either way, his playing is a disservice to Mr. Scott Joplin and his legions of fans and admirers. When listening to "Heliotrope Bouquet", I could hear the pedal being pressed at awkward moments. You can't blame these strange instances on the recording being old or the brand of piano that was used, or if it (the piano) was in tip top shape. Blame the pianist! I can't help but wonder why the record label hired this guy? A possible explanation could be that at the time this collection was recorded, was still during the height of the ragtime and Scott Joplin revival and the record label wanted to jump on this bandwagon and quickly turn out a complete Joplin collection. Based on the outcome of this production, I doubt the record label took the time to find a better qualified musician for the job.
For those who are looking for the VERY BEST complete Scott Joplin collection, I highly recommend the following 2 collections: #1, "Scott Joplin: 1895 - 1914 The Complete Rags, Marches, Waltzes & Songs" by Guido Nielsen, which is available on the Basta Label AND #2, "Scott Joplin - Treemonisha" 2 CD cast album recording by Gunther Schuller and the Houston Opera House. Both recordings are a MUST HAVE for any Scott Joplin fan, along with the Joshua Rifkin CD for a superbly played 'greatest hits' collection. Simply put, THIS collection is not worth buying.
