Music Review: Good selection of songs

I've noticed that sometimes people don't understand that recording technology changes over time or don't understand the way music was presented in the past. A review on here complained about the fidelity or the sound quality of this cd, especially in its early parts. Well the reason the fidelity isn't so great is due to the fact that Sarah Vaughan was recording on a minor label called Musicraft in the forties, which probably didn't have a huge A&R budget. Also in the early fifties, stereo hadn't really evolved yet to where her recording companies at that time, MGM and then Columbia, were using it. So really, her Mercury recordings from the mid fifties are going to have the best sound quality. I would ask that you make the effort to listen to the voice and how it evolved from the nineteen forties to the nineteen seventies. A record from 1948 will never sound as good as a multitrack record from the seventies. However, I noticed something when listening to her 1959 track "Misty" which is whoever mixed it, her voice is in the background. It's not very prominent at all. Maybe the producer really wanted you to hear "a thousand violins"?

This is a superb introduction to Sarah Vaughan's vocal art, spanning her career from its beginnings in 1944 to 1985 and demonstrating her astonishing combination of gifts, with the luxuriant sound of her voice stretching from warm, evocative ballads to scintillating scat. From the outset of her career, Vaughan was adept at the harmonic subtleties of the newly emerging bop, apparent here in "Interlude," a vocal version of Dizzy Gillespie's "Night in Tunisia" with the composer adding brash trumpet, as well as in "I Love You," a duet with Billy Eckstine. Every track is a career highpoint, with Vaughan's blend of lyric nuance and virtuosity making songs like "Misty," "My Man," and "Send in the Clowns" absolutely her own. Her performances here are consistently complemented by brilliant soloists, including trumpeter Clifford Brown, tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims, guitarist Joe Pass, and bassist George Duvivier, while her own piano playing enhances the intimacy of "Nearness of You." --Stuart BroomerTraditional Vocal Pop CDs
