Music Review: A gorgeous voice paired with equally gorgeous music

From the first time I heard "Love Song", I knew Sara Bareilles was just the kind of singer for whom I'd been searching. It seems like so much female talent is wasted to vapid and manufactured pop music that I'd almost given up on female singers entirely. I was overjoyed when I discovered KT Tunstall and wasn't sure I'd find anyone else I'd like as well. I'm glad that Sara Bareilles proved me wrong.
Perhaps one of her best attributes is that she has a very powerful, lovely voice but she uses it with restraint. She does cut loose on some of her songs (Vegas comes to mind here) but she does so in a classic tradition of a diva belting it out rather than a pop princess delving into the realm of the shriek. I'm very pleased to say that there is never any shrieking in this album, just a pure and velvety voice.
Couple this with the cleverness of Bareilles's lyrics and it's easy to see why she's such a winning combination. Some of her songs are plaintive and lovely, such as One Sweet Love, while others speak frankly of the travails of love, such as Fairytale. Bareilles comes across as wry and savvy and while she isn't shy about being blunt, she never sounds bitter to me. Instead, she sounds like a woman who has gained a bit of wisdom or two and who wryly injects pearls of that wisdom into her work.
Bareilles is a woman of serious talent and I hope fervently that she'll continue to produce albums of the quality of Little Voice. I know I'll be anxiously awaiting them.
Description of Little Voice
Brilliant 12 trk debut album on Columbia & features the massive hit "Love Song". Both single & album have been Top 5 in the US. Produced by Eric Rosse (Tori Amos) & features 3 more hit singles.For many listeners, Little Voice will be their first exposure to this soulful singer/songwriter, but it's actually Sara Bareilles' second record. Her first, the self-released Careful Confessions, led to a deal with Epic. Since then, Bareilles has opened for Marc Broussard and Maroon 5. She's also become a bonafide soundtrack queen with tracks featured in female-centric films Girl Play, Loving Annabelle, and Monster-in-Law. As with her out-of-print debut, the UCLA grad wrote every song on her first major label recording (Little Voice features re-worked versions of several demo numbers). Like the portrait on the back of the CD--Bareilles in strappy black dress and lace-free high-tops--the piano-playing chanteuse combines the sweet with the scruffy. While her jazzy pop melodies are radio-ready, her relationship-oriented lyrics can be unexpectedly salty ("Bottle Up" and "Come Round Soon" wouldn't pass FCC muster). A little profanity here and there, however, doesn't indicate tough-girl attitude--Amy Winehouse can rest easy--so much as a desire to express herself freely. As Bareilles explains in "Love Song," "I'm trying to let you hear me as I am." (Not surprisingly, her degree is in communications.) Fans of Sarah McLachlan and Alicia Keyes will find much to like here. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
