Music reviews of Caravanserai

Music Review: Take one cup Latin jazz. Add rock to taste. Stir and simmer.
Rating: 5 Stars

After success with their debut, meteoric success with Abraxas, and continued accomplishment with Santana III, the infinitely eclectic and hypnotic band that was Santana made the choice that must have made a hundred record execs wake up screaming: the move towards jazz fusion. Even if Miles Davis or John McLaughlin had managed to spin a gold record from the daring new path that was jazz-rock, Santana had risen to stardom with tight vocal numbers, buttressed by timbales and congas, and bookended by Carlos Santana's sharp, unpredictable guitar. Abraxas itself was propelled by the radio-friendly "Black Magic Woman" and "Oye Como Va". For their part, the execs were right; Santana's fortunes, pop-wise, took an inevitable downturn with the transition. Caravanserai, for its part, is not a radio-friendly album. Many of the tracks are instrumentals. The vocals have no irresistible hooks or thumping, arena-rock refrains. Caravanserai is an album first and a collection of songs second. For the record exec looking to fill out a greatest hits album, Caravanserai is a disappointment. For anyone looking for innovative, rhythmic, melodic, Latin-colored fusion, Caravanserai is a success.

As before, Santana kicks off the album with a mood-establishing instrumental. The opening sounds are not dancing congas or howling guitars; rather, we hear chirping crickets and ethereal sax lines. With soft chimes, double bass, and soft, jazzy drums, we soon realize that this is something more than "Abraxas, Part II".

"Waves Within" feels like a continuation of its predecessor, but Carlos Santana's entrance marks a pillar of things to come. The track is his showcase, and his playing is hard, melodic, and restlessly inventive.

"Look Up (To See What's Coming Down)" offers something completely different: jazz-funk. Douglas Rauch lays down the thick bassline, with wah-wah guitar in the background. Santana was nothing if not open to new styles.

"Just in Time to See the Sun" is our first vocal number, leaning towards the rock end of the spectrum. It's a fine piece of work, but you won't be humming it on the drive down to Panama City.

"Song of the Wind" is a return to the "Waves Within" formula; a trademark Santana rhythm carpets capricious guitar and pulsing organ.

"All the Love of the Universe" sounds the most like a radio single of anything here, though it's a little long for that. The message is upbeat, the guitar work is taut, and the vocals are catchy enough.

"Future Primitive" is just the opposite. Half the track is a pulse of pure sound, with some percussion injected in the middle to tie it up.

"Stone Flower" is, among other things, the most strongly Latin track on the album. The guitar snarls good-naturedly, the organ shimmers, the drums pulse. At first glance, it seems to be a more pop-flavored number, but further scrutiny reveals jazzy soloing around spiraling themes.

"La Fuente del Ritmo" features more of the same difference, if you catch my drift. Twin guitars bring up memories of the Allman Brothers, while fast drums keep the rhythm hypnotically intense.

"Every Step of the Way" closes the album. It restates the themes we have delved into and builds higher; while some albums fade on a quiet note, Caravanserai is determined to burn brightly until it goes out.

Santana may always be best remembered for Abraxas. No doubt, it was a masterpiece, combining avant-garde Latin-rock-blues-fusion into a surprisingly accessible sound. Is Caravanserai a better album? Maybe. Maybe not. For anyone who bought Abraxas because you couldn't get "Oye Como Va" by itself, you might want to spend your money on something less challenging. For anyone who wants powerful guitar, those trademark Santana rhythms, and an unbridled spirit of freedom and experimentation, this is the album for you.
