Music Review: The Greatest Voice on Earth!

Great to have a new record by Sandi -- always welcome. Also very pleasing to have her backed by an orchestra, not a bunch of synthesizers. The best musician deserves the best music. Very best song on this recording 'Sandi-style' is "In My Heart." The song is beautiful, worshipful, with hopeful lyrics, awesome musicianship, style/phrasings: A+. The song "Falling Forward" is a good song with a great concept, which carries the overall thought of this album. Regrettably, "Sandi's Medley" of three of her most well-known songs of the past, though backed with full-blown orchestra, sounds like recorded accompaniment a church choir would use for a cantata. Sounds pre-fabricated, canned, and it shows. If you cannot improve the original, let it go. The "Sweeter Medley" is very good -- The songs flow, are upbeat, fun, and very enjoyable to hear. "Step Into the Joy" sounds Gaither-ish. "Found" and "You Call Me Yours" sound like musical testimonies and are very sweet. On "Grace Flows Down," Jenn Helvering, Sandi's daughter, demonstrates her very own remarkable vocal stylings. She's good! But the song itself is a short worship ditty that does not stand up to Sandi's quality standards for songs on most of her recordings. Cute, but why is this song here? I'd like to hear these ladies cut loose and really show their abilities together. However, this is a good song on which to end the album. Though one may always want to give Sandi five stars no matter what because even her aura demands it (and one may feel she does no wrong musically), it's really unfair to not honestly give a proper, fair rating for an overall project. Sorry, but this is not a five-star recording. But it's getting there! (If this same project had been done by most other artists, it would be an average recording with a three-star rating.) Don't get me wrong -- Sandi's musicality is the best of the best, whether it's gospel, pop, soul, opera, classical, you-name-it. God gave this woman a voice -- and then some. May He be praised for His magnanimous blessings! Another reviewer noted that this record is similar in style to "Artist of My Soul," a 1990s project. I agree, with the additional note that "Falling Forward" has a more upbeat, positive tone. It's also great to see that a mega-label is handling Sandi's product -- Columbia Records. Buy this 4+ star album -- You will be blessed. Rock on, Sandi!
