Music Review: Profoundly Humane, Musically Exciting

Many 20th C compositions specifically for choruses are more enjoyable for the singers than for audiences. That's not only because choral singing has become vastly less practiced as a form of recreation than it was in earlier centuries; Brahms, for instance, wrote brilliant motets and song cycles for amateur choruses of his era. Rather, I think, it's because choral singing have been relegated to museum status, or has been pigeon-holed as one of the activities that students are encouraged to join, to beef up their college application resumes.
This is definitely NOT the case with the compositions on "I Never Saw Another Butterfly", setting the poignant words of children extinguished in the Death Camps of World war II. It is also not true of the San Francisco Girls' Chorus, an entirely independent organization with enormous community support. There are at least four CDs of the Chorus available, including a splendid performance of Venetian baroque polyphony as well as this recording of modern music. The SF Girls' Chorus can now take pride in a Grammy award.
The Girls' Chorus will be combining forces with the SF Boys Chorus to sing patriotic choral compositions as part of the televised inauguration Of Barack Obama on Jan. 20, 2009. One of the compositions will be a setting by a San Francisco composer of portions of Obama's acceptance speech, an expression of the values that have lifted our patriotic sights again, from America-first hegemony to America as the "city on the hill" of equality and tolerance. Perhaps the "city on the Golden Gate" has been that "city on a hill" all along.
Description of I Never Saw Another Butterfly; Songs of the Twentieth Century
The San Francisco Girls Chorus presents a musical tribute to the children who were victims of the Holocaust during World War II. This provacative choral work is based on poetry written by children who were interned in the ghetto of Terezin on their tragic journey to Auschwitz from 1941-1945. Many of the pieces are a cappella. Pianist Dwight Okamura accompanies the remainder.General CDs
