Music Review: Sam Roberts Has The Goods

Sam Roberts simply has the goods; this is simply a fantastic record.

In a world overly inundated with formulaic pop and contrived, manufactured and bland rock bands, Sam Roberts provides with 'Born In A Flame' a welcome and frankly necessary antidote. He proves himself to be a clearly gifted melodicist, as many of his melodies on BIAF are simply gorgeous and memorable. He is an equally talented songwriter possessing the ability to construct fascinating songs on varying levels both sonically and lyrically; and as a relative 'beginner' he has already surely proven himself to have mastered the art of songcraft with this record.

I first heard of Sam Roberts when I saw him opening up for another woefully globally under-rated Canadian rock act, The Tragically Hip. I can assure you that as riveting as this record is, on stage you can multiply that by about a thousand. Roberts is every bit as gifted and entertaining a performer as he is a songwriter and musician.

Roberts presents a wide palette of varying musical styles here; in the future he could stretch out in just about any direction, and probably will. A musical mind this fertile simply can't be caged; nor should it be. Yes, he can rock out, and does so on tracks like 'Higher Learning' and the ridiculously catchy 'Don't Walk Away Eileen,' but in my opinion it's with the quieter and more sombre numbers that this record truly peaks out. 'This Wreck Of A Life' is simply mezmerizing in it's eloquence, for example, and 'Taj Mahal' is equally captivating throughout and with it's unexpected guitar soloing toward the end of the track.

That Roberts wrote, arranged and played all instruments here (except for drums) and made it all sound like a band effort is truly astonishing. That said, his road band is no band of slouches either, they carry his songs out on stage in a gruffer and more raw presentation than on BIAF; the drummer looking like he is barely old enough to legally drink.

Sam tips his hat to all kinds of musical genres here, from rock to folk to gospel and to everywhere in between, practically, and tops of his tunes with insightful and intelligent, mature lyrics. In short this record and this artist - he and his band are completely unpretentious - press photo shots have them wearing baseball hats half the time for goodness sake - hardly fashionable!! - is basically the opposite of everything you have come to hate about commercialized corporate pop/rock music. If the state of the commercialized music industry bothers you at all - then this record is for you.

That is because this is not the usual standard disposable pop/pap records filled with one or two pablum-ish type disposable singles inserted amongst 10 filler tracks. This is potent album oriented rock as it used to be presented back in rock's heyday in the late 60s and early 70s. There are no weak tracks on the record and there is no obvious single. It's a record meant to be listend to from beginning to end, as all the classic ones are.

You will be still listening to and enjoying this album 10 years from now, and furtehr into the future, guaranteed, and you will still be discovering subtle nuances within the music that you had missed before; it's just that good.

At the 2004 Juno Awards Sam Roberts walked away with three major awards (Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Rock Album of the Year). Already a huge success in their Canadian homeland, Lost Highway is re-releasing We Were Born In A Flame in the United Stes with two extra tracks.
A Montreal native and former hockey player, Sam Roberts gave up dreams of becoming a star Canadien [stet] to embark on a musical career. Given the track record of most jocks behind the mic, this doesn?t exactly portend great results, but Roberts's full-length debut is pretty good. Roberts writes tuneful folk-rock and power-pop tunes, many of them built around a percussively strummed acoustic guitar. Musically, he covers some of the same musical territory as Travis, but overall the effect is more extroverted and aggressive, less wispy and melancholic. Three of this CD's best songs are lifted by an earlier EP, Inhuman Condition, but there?s not a bum track among the 13 included here (although an unnecessary '70s rock-star guitar solo comes close to ruining the otherwise gorgeous and seductive orchestral pop of "Taj Mahal"). Canada seems full of musical artists who don't quite translate outside that country?s national borders, but the bright, confident appeal of Roberts?s full-length bow is far more universal. --Keith Moerer
