Description of Sam Butera And The Witnesses Play Music From The Rat Race [ORIGINAL RECORDINGS REMASTERED]
In 1960, PARAMOUNT made a film starring Tony Curtis and Debbie Reynolds in which the comedy plot revolved around an aspiring but naive sax player (Curtis) arriving in New York seeking fame, but finding the road to success paved with pitfalls. He meets and eventually falls in love with a hostess-cum-dancer (Reynolds) with similar ambitions, and the film follows their struggles to survive, including sharing a room together in order to save money. The music was scored by Elmer Bernstein, and apart from Sam Butera featured Joe Buskin and Gerry Mulligan. This JASMINE reissue of an original DOT album features Sam s playing of the score, which includes arrangements of many well-known standards. As a bonus, JASMINE has added five extra tracks which maintain the style, four remastered from other releases plus one superb, previously unissued version of Night Train. SAM BUTERA, whose frantic antics spark that dynamic group, The Witnesses, has just completed his first movie role, playing a saxophonist in the motion picture, "The Rat Race". It is very appropriate for this versatile and indefatigable saxist and singer to provide the romping, driving settings for these ten all-time standard favourites, which comprise the bulk of the musical score for the Curtis-Reynolds starring vehicle. Here's Sam, pride of the Louis Prima-Keely Smith aggregation, displaying his energy and taste in his version of the powerful score.
