Music Review: Mostly Aggressive Guitars Over Saliva's Soft Chorus Formula...
Rating: 3 Stars

An Improvement over "Blood Stained Love Story"

If a band starts out with a hard rock/metal album like "Every Six Seconds", fans tend to have that expectation with each album, but as their career continues, Saliva has been shifting into more ballads and pop-like songs more often, and if you expect the heaviness, it's starting to become a minority on each album it seems.

Tracks 1, 2 "My Own Worst Enemy", and track 5 "Hunt You Down" are my favorites, with some aggressive riffs, good choruses and verses. Track 2, Own Worst Enemy is a really good one, then track 5 is nicely aggressive, and finally Track 1 "Family Reunion", the trademark "Boom!" track is okay, more like a Ladies and Gentleman song, but not bad. It can't match "Click, Click Boom" though. Tracks 3 and 6 are somewhat heavy but Track 3 has too many soft choruses that sucks out the cool aggression that was building up, and Track 6 is mostly soft choruses, too smooth and pleasant compared to the hard, gritty vocals elsewhere on the album.

The rest of the album? If you like ballads and softer tunes with a sprinkling of aggressive guitars under Saliva's familiar 'soft vocal chorus formula', this might work, but not for me. Out of these, tracks 4 "How Could You" and 10 "So Long" sound good in that style, and well written if I had to listen to them. Track 4 reminds me a little of "Always", from Back Into Your System. Track 10 has some nice piano and vocal melody.

Saliva, who started with a mostly hard rock album, "Every Six Seconds", likes a range of soft and hard rock songs to sing with each new album, otherwise, they're being told to also market themselves to a lighter audience. This still sounds heavier than their last album, "Blood Stained Love Story", but 3 solid hard rock/metal tracks out of 10 doesn't feel like it's worth buying the album for, unless you must have every album of a band you like. Best to preview what you like and download that, unless you like the softer direction Saliva's been taking.

Opinions on each track:
Track 1 Family Reunion- The "Boom" Track. Sounds okay. 3/5
Track 2 My Own Worst Enemy, great, hard rocking song, favorite track. 5/5
Track 3 Best of Me, the soft chorus is okay, riffs okay. 3/5
Track 4 How Could You, good ballad song, heavy, not really. 3/5
Track 5 Hunt You Down, nice, heavier track, good rhythms, 4/5
Track 6 Judgment Day, old western style, but soft vocal chorus, repetitious. 2/5
Track 7 Forever and a Day, a soft love song ballad. 1/5
Track 8 I'm Coming Back, rap followed by a soft chorus and a vocal roar, 2/5
Track 9 Southern Girls, Saliva's version of California Girls. 2/5
Track 10 So Long, soft song, not my style, but well written, 3/5 (4/5 if it's your style).

Album, 3/5 in my opinion. Decent aggression returns, but too many soft choruses.

Description of Cinco Diablo

Multi-platinum Island Records' five-man band Saliva has completed its aptly-titled fifth album, CINCO DIABLO, set to arrive in the physical and digital marketplace on December 16th - the ultimate alt-metal post-grunge must-have CD this twisted holiday season! The new album's first single pick, "Family Reunion," was #1 Most Added at Active Rock and Modern Rock radio and is already on over 75 stations at both formats.

In advance support of CINCO DIABLO, Memphis favorites Saliva continue their never-ending headlining tour schedule with Jet Black Stare, Drowning Pool, and Tantric through Nov. 11th (Veteran's Day) in Texas. Saliva will play a halftime NBA homecoming gig at FedEx Forum in Memphis on Halloween, when the Grizzlies host the Magic.

CINCO DIABLO is the long-awaited followed to Blood Stained Love Story, Saliva's fourth album, released nearly two years ago in January 2007. It gave the band the highest Soundscan debut of their career - #19-bullet on combined first week sales of 30,000 copies. The album also spun off one of Saliva's highest-charting singles, "Ladies and Gentlemen," which rose to #1 at Active Rock and #2 at Mainstream Rock. "Ladies and Gentlemen" was heard in a Sony Playstation commercial last year, and was also used in Wrestlemania and Ultimate Fighting show Wired. The song matched the success of their biggest single to date, "Always," which hit #1 at Active and Modern Rock back in 2002 (from the Back Into Your System album).

Saliva - singer and lyricist Josey Scott, guitarists Wayne Swinny and Jon Montoya, bassist Dave Novotny, and drummer Paul Crosby - was formed in Memphis in 1996, and issued their eponymously titled indie debut the next year. Their major label debut arrived on Island's Uptown/Universal imprint in 2001, Every Six Seconds. It included their first charted rock single "Click Click Boom" and the Grammy-nominated #3 Mainstream Rock track, "Your Disease" (featured on the Dracula 2000 movie soundtrack). (Every Six Seconds, now available via the newly-relaunched Mercury Records label, received RIAA double-platinum certification in July 2008.)
