Music Review: Did Mozart kill Salieri?

Salieri has become one of the most undervalued composers in the history of music. His reputation was tainted by the rumors that he had poisoned Mozart. This legend was spread by artists like Pushkin, Rimsky-Korsakov and Foreman ("Amadeus"). In fact Salieri and Mozart were on friendly terms and Salieri supported Mozart's widow financially after the death of her husband.

Then people kept saying that Salieri lacks Mozart's depth. Easily said - hard to prove? Does Rossini lack Mozart's depth?

Who would like to listen to the shallow music of a horrible character who robbed us of masterpieces Mozart may have written if he had lived a little longer?

So figuratively speaking we could say that Mozart killed Salieri.

I must admit that I shared the prejudices against Salieri and never became interested in his music. This altered drastically when I listened to Salieri's "Axur, Re d'Ormus". I would never have bought this opera but it was part of a collection of unknown Italian operas. I enjoyed this recording very much, the music is inspired and the libretto is good, after all it is by Mozart's favorite librettist Da Ponte. I was so impressed that I bought all the available recordings of Salieri's operas. "The grotto of Trionfo" is another fantastic one.

It is a shame that so few recordings of Salieri's operas exist. There is only one recording of "Axur" which appeared under different labels. But as it is very inexpensive, you should give it a try. If you like Mozart's operas you will enjoy this one.
