Music Review: Definition of a soul siren

Sade isn't your average diva. She doesn't do red carpets. She's never done intimate, sit down interviews with Oprah or Barbara Walters, made millions publishing the first photos of her baby, or used her image to promote perfume or lingerie (although that would be interesting). Most of all, she and the band release music when they're ready to. That's almost unheard of in a world where most artists will churn out bland crap at rapid fire speed in order to top the charts. Sade's an anomaly in that way by playing by their own rules and yet they're still on top. Since 1985's Diamond Life and counting.
Using elements of jazz, funk, soul, pop, chillout, and world music, the exotic British-Nigerian songstress took the music world by storm with bandmates Stuart Matthewman's sax and guitar, Paul Denman's bass, and Andrew Hale's keyboard by her side. Can't forget backup vocalist Leroy Osbourne who's been on board since 1988.
The bossa nova single Smooth Operator caught the ear of listeners everywhere with it's sexy sax and tale of a heartbreaker whose "eyes are like angel's/But his heart his cold." Your Love Is King is a sophisticated dedication to a super lover who makes Sade's "soul sing" and Hang On To Your Love is the advice given to couples "down on luck". The downcast Jezebel tells the story of a young woman selling her body in order to make it in life. "It would seem she's on her way/It's more, more than just a dream/She put on her stockings and shoes/Had nothing to lose - she said it was worth it... Every winter was a war she said/I want to get what's mine."
Released as the first single from the follow-up Promise, The Sweetest Taboo became the group's next hit and signature song. Opening and closing with the sound of a light rain, Sade is caught up in the "quiet storm" of a man whose love is beyond words. However the explosive torch song Is It a Crime longs for a no good lover you can't shake off. Sade steps away from her usual icy vocals for a more expressive delivery and knocks it out of the park. The single version of Never As Good As the First Time benefits from Leroy's warm background vocals and a lively, sweeping production.
After a 3 year hiatus, the band returned with their most misunderstood album Stronger Than Pride. Moving completely away from jazz, the peaceful, almost hushed Love Is Stronger Than Pride mixes Sade's airy tone with Leroy's rich vocals. The tropical jam Paradise picks up the tempo and the funky Nothing Can Come Between Us is a certified head nodder.
Love Deluxe (a precursor to neo-soul imo) brought back the jazz of the band's earlier work. The underwater rhythm of No Ordinary Love became another hit and featured Sade as a lovestruck mermaid in the memorable video. "Keep cryin' for you/Keep tryin' for you/Keep tryin'/And I'm fallin'!" The beautiful Like a Tattoo, while not a single, makes a well deserved appearance on the compilation. It shares the story of a war vet Sade once met a NYC bar. Although it'd been years since his experiences, "the war is still raging inside of me" and would forever haunt him.
I could listen to Kiss of Life on a constant loop and never get tired of it. Such a jazzy, ethereal song that's positively high on the very idea of love. "When I was led to you/I knew you were the one for me/I swear the whole world could feel my heartbeat/When I lay eyes on you/Ay ay ay/You wrapped me up in/The color of love!" Sade's silky vocals, the band's intoxicating groove, and those lush strings! I love everything about it. I've never heard the band as old school bluesy as they are on Please Send Me Someone to Love, a cover of the "heal the world" Percy Mayfield tune.
Another song I never get tired of is Cherish the Day. The single version retains that hypnotic guitar and airy atmosphere with heavier drums added in. "I cherish the day/I won't go astray/I won't be afraid/You won't catch me running... Won't run away/Won't shy!"
The emotional closer Pearls tells the woeful story of a Somalian woman "scraping for pearls on the roadside" in order to keep herself and her young daughter alive. "The sun gives her no mercy/The same sky we lay under/Burns her to the bone/Long as afternoon shadows/It's gonna take her to get home/Each grain carefully wrappedup/Pearls for her little girl." Sade's shouts of "Hallelujah" will grip your heart and refuse to let go. Powerful.
Sade once said that it was her dream to use her music to attract people from all different races, backgrounds, and walks of life. It's safe to say she and the band have done just that. Sampled by rappers (Krayzie Bone), covered by rockers (Deftones), and admired by pop stars (Beyonce and Christina Aguilera), Sade continues to follow the beat of their own drum and we wouldn't have it any other way.
