Music Review: Behind every word... one grain that shimmers in the light
Rating: 4 Stars

Not a storybook with a happy ending, but still an optimistic one. Who are we if we don't have something to hold on to and believe in? The strength and tenderness that comes from the heart. The resiliency of the human spirit; the faith of just trusting.

Times when you question the purpose of struggles and the compassion of the universe. Racism, suffering that befalls the innocence of children, relationships that leave you with a broken heart. If you are true to your being you will realize that when you see just one set of footprints in the sand, you aren't abandoned, but rather your faith is carrying you. In the end only your heart will get you through.

The instrumentation is simple minimalism but accompanies the words and solidifies the mood. Sade remains true to her heart but with a different view. In 'Lovers Rock' she seems like she has taken off her sunglasses and put on more positive ones.

If your formula is always the same how can others know more? In a market of insatiable consumerism, static or short memories and corporate label number crunching it is important for an artist to stay true to them selves but still evolve or grow by challenging their foundation. It is admirable Sade and her band are seemingly by one another's side. Her artistic expression flowed when she was ready rather than merely listening to the chatter.

Music Review: No love deluxe here...
Rating: 2 Stars

This much anticipated follow-up double cd to Love Deluxe, falls into a different category and genre. Unfortunately, it would be hard for any artist to be able to follow up to such a powerful album as Love Deluxe. The best songs on Lovers Rock are By Your Side and King of Sorrow. The other songs tend to use the same monotonous drum machine pattern, that after a while bores you.

I am not disappointed by this double cd, but I am not overwhelmed neither. Although the album is cohesive and follows a good pattern, it does not provide the smooth and erotic flow that Love Deluxe had. As stated it would be hard to follow-up on a song like No Ordinary Love, the ultimate love song of life.

This is a good album for your collection, but it will not be one you listen to the most. It is a good buy, but you will prefer to listen to the 2nd CD which contains live recordings of past songs, including a great live rendition of No Ordinary Love. It would be for the 2nd CD that I would recommend this album, as the live songs are worth their weight.

Unlike SEAL, SADE did not direct this album into a different dimension of sound for fans. Instead, it focused on two or three themes and continued with that alone. If you are a collector, buy it. If you are not a collector, may I suggest you purchase the 18 track compilation or Love Deluxe.

Music Review: Why fix what isn't broken?
Rating: 5 Stars

Sade has become one of those artists whose recordings I will by without having heard them, resting assured that I won't be disatisfied with my purchase. I happened to be in a record store a few weeks ago, and this cd was playing. Though I only stayed long enough to hear one chorus of the title track "Lover's Rock", the hook of the chorus stuck in my head until I finally, inevitably bought a copy. I was not disappointed, and considered the cd a promise fulfilled. Sade basically picks up where she left off with some of her later recordings, straying from her initial sound (which counered her voice wonderfully against saxaphone) to a more subdued, acoustic sound which puts her unique voice and evocative lyrics in the spotlight they deserve. The featured instrument here is her voice, harmonized with itself through the magic of over-dubbing. This is grown-up music in that it bypasses the trends of celebrity-producer-rapper cameos and endless melismas and focuses on honest, straightfoward music. Stand-out tracks include "By Your Side", "King of Sorrow", "All About Our Love", "and "Lover's Rock", not to say that the rest of the cd is filler. Every song here stands on it's own quite well. It all satisfies. In the end, more of the same from Sade is more than enough.

Music Review: Sweetest Gift.
Rating: 4 Stars

Where can a music listener go these days to hear mature, intelligent and well played music? Searching the radio and tv only leads to the latest fads in music and it seems many people have forgotten what craft means. Now music is so manufactured and geared towards specific audiences, limiting diversity and making new music listeners ignorant of what's come before. Enter Sade's new cd "Lovers Rock". Right from the opening track "By Your Side" you feel rewarded for having waited 8 years to hear this kind of music again. Of course, Sade hasn't changed much, but that's just as much a positive as it is a negative. Positive because even though she hasn't changed her sound much it's that sound that sets her apart from many of today's r&b acts--she has her own identity and groove, and that's refreshing. Negative due to the fact that Sade has the tendency to not vary her sound too much on each cd. She never breaks into an impassioned frenzy but rather tends to keep is smooth and mellow and at times sad. Yet, "Lovers Rock" has enough variance to keep the listener interested. On "Slave Song" she breaks out the reggae beats which she hasn't covered before--and to nice effect. In a year with slim musical choices and satisfaction Sade's "Lovers Rock" is a welcome relief.

Music Review: Sade is back in her groove....
Rating: 4 Stars

LOVERS ROCK has been my most anticipated album of the last 5 years, EASILY. I'm more than glad Sade didn't feel she had to deliver an album that sounded like her previous work. Some reviewers have said they were disappointed by the sound and style on the new album. I guess some of her fans were expecting more of the same music. It's great that Sade is taking her music in a different direction. In my opinion she's doing what she wants and that's why she continues to deliver the goods every time. Even if she makes us wait 8 years, it was worth it.

I'll admit I do miss of the "jazzier" elements of Diamond Life (my absolute favorite) with saxophone and drums. But, the songwriting and the overall production are amazing. Sade doesn't disappoint especially on my favorites: King of Sorrow, Slave Song, Immigrant, It's The Love That Gets You Through and the unbelievably moving Somebody Already Broke My Heart. I can play that one song over and over again, and never tire of it. Too bad the local radio stations in Denver don't take the time to play ANYTHING off this new album. Only one radio station, which is mostly contemporary jazz, will play her, and even then infrequently. Would be nice if her label would put some marketing power behind this. It is a classic for Sade fans all over the planet!
