Music Review: Bewitching

Be prepared .... this voice is something to behold and very addictive!
Have many of his CD's and although I love operatic arias and they are ultimately my favourites, this album, Amore e Musica, is very beautiful with exquisite depth and warmth to his tone especially in "I Believe", and "I'll walk with God". "The Alchemist" is sensational too as are many others on this CD. His attention to detail and emotion is beyond anything I have ever heard before. He evokes strong emotions in me but unfortunately it means I can't do anything else while he is singing - I HAVE to stop everything and LISTEN. If you love the music of Elgar you will recognise "We Will Stand Together" and although I don't really approve of putting words to such magnificent classical pieces, I have to say I feel very moved when listening to Russell's voice in this rendition.
(I note that he was given permission from Elgar's Trust, which speaks volumes.)
This tall, attractive Englishman is a delight to listen to and to see perform. He recently appeared on stage at Carnegie Hall in a leading role in "Kristina" and was much acclaimed, being described by one critic as a "Matinee Idol". (Perhaps I'm not sure how much of a compliment that is though as he is such a serious musician.) This performance will be repeated at The Albert Hall in London in April and how I would love to see it.
FULL MARKS FOR AMORE E MUSICA and now I can't wait for his classical CD to be produced this year (2010)

Description of Amore Musica

Over 2 million albums sold in the UK since the release of "The Voice" in 2000. Undoubtedly the most romantic, passionate and personal musical offering from Russell to date.
Russell Watson's Amore Musica is his first since recent throat surgery--and his fans need not worry. While his sound remains somewhat manufactured (the engineers deserve credit for equalizing his tone), he knows how to put across a heart-rending melody whether he's crooning ("cooing" would not be an inappropriate word either) or using a darker, fuller tone. The inspirational "You Raise Me Up" contains great examples of both. He's backed by a chorus in a song made up of a medley of tunes from the film Gladiator. Lara Fabian joins him in a duet called "The Alchemist." He wrings every bit of emotion out of "I'll Walk with God" from The Student Prince. A tune based on Elgar's "Nimrod" sits very high, and Watson occasionally sounds as if he's shouting. Purists might argue with the many breaks in his voice between registers, while his fans love precisely these tics, but by now those who love him will know that they want this CD and will not be disappointed. Opera lovers--or even Bocelli fans--need not apply. --Robert Levine
