Music Review: Get this man a voice teacher before he records again!

It's very interesting to scroll through the reviews of Russell Watson's debut CD, because they basically fall into two categories; 1) people who are "in the know" when it comes to music and performing, (in other words, they've had some type of music training themselves), or 2) people who have no idea what's going on on this CD, but they "know what they like when they hear it", and get bitterly resentful when people tell them that something is afoul in Watson's performance. Well, add me to the growing list of Type One. When it comes to musical performances, there are things that you do and don't do. If you are singing in a foreign language, you do research and find out the CORRECT pronunciations of the words. You try and find pieces that are within your realm of capability, and you DON'T try and sing things that are out of your league, too early in the game. And you also do not adapt a "look at me" attitude by calling your first project "The Voice", especially when you do NOT have the skills to back it up. Just because you can sing high A's and B flats, does NOT mean you automatically have the chops to perform a piece like "Nessun Dorma" or "La Donna e Mobile". (Case in point; listen to the recording of "La Donna e Mobile" on the "Three Mo' Tenors" debut album, and you'll hear how the cadenza-like section at the end of the song is SUPPOSED to sound; EVERY note can be heard clearly on their version. When Russell Watson sings this same section, the scale passage becomes a sloppy slur of notes, which is not acceptable for this piece at all.) To put it in a different context, just because you can jump high enough to touch the rim of the basketball net, doesn't mean you can go out and join the NBA! I fully expect to get razzed for criticizing poor Mr. Watson, but I hope some of you will actually stop and think about WHY those of us who are musicians in our own right are upset with this release. I feel it's absurd that an untrained musician should be able to waltz into Decca Records and get a contract, when there are so many others in the world who have worked hard at their craft, and are much better at it, yet they go unnoticed. Yes, Mr Watson has a potentially powerful voice, but it certainly cannot be referred to as THE voice; it is untrained and it shows. Maybe not to the casual listener, as some of these other reviews attest, but regardless, the problems are there. You can hear the tension in his voice when he goes for the high notes; if he keeps this kind of thing up, he won't HAVE a voice in a few years. It simply will not hold up to the kind of abuse he's inflicting on it. I would challenge customers to listen to this CD alongside some of the great voices of our time, or for that matter, of other eras as well. Browse through classical or vocal sections of music stores, and take the time to seek out artists who KNOW their craft and have actually spent time shaping it. Maybe you'll start to hear what the rest of us are hearing.....or NOT hearing, as the case may be.

Full length LP from the British tenor that shot straight to the top of the UK classical charts. Features many beautiful renditions of classical & e-z listening standards, plus a version of 'Nessun Dorma', which Watson often sings before high-profile English soccer matches.
Russell Watson's story is a classic rags-to-riches fairy tale: The former welder, after years of singing in pubs and clubs, traveled from Salford, his hometown, to London. He turned up unannounced at the Decca offices and was promptly signed up by one of the most important classical labels in the world. Vocal coaching followed, as did a number of successful live appearances supporting Cliff Richard. Now, we have this recital CD, which explores a wide range of musical styles. Watson's Italian is a little ponderous in tracks such as "Amor Ti Vieta," but this is more than offset by his captivating and utterly natural-sounding tenor voice. The inevitable popular arias are here, namely "La Donna è Mobile" and "Nessun Dorma," sung with a refreshing and youthful vitality. Pop tracks, including Ultravox's classic 1980s hit "Vienna" and a witty cover version of "Barcelona" sung with former Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder, sit comfortably on the disc. Watson performs them with integrity, not simply paying lip service to the music of his generation. Watson has the potential to do for classical music what Jamie Oliver has done for cookery, and there are few people who won't find this debut CD appealing. --Rebecca Agnew
