Music reviews of Snakes & Arrows Live 2 CD Set

Music Review: More of the same
Rating: 4 Stars

Rush used to put out a live album after every 4 studio albums, making a nice bookend to an era's body of work. Their first live album, "All the world's a Stage", for example, captured a live performance of their first material, and then Rush headed off in a new musical direction. The next live album, "Exit Stage Left", did the same thing. The same is true for "A Show of Hands" and "Different Stages". I always liked that approach. (I don't know if they did that as deliberately as they seemed to. I know that they originally planned to do a live album right after "Permanent Waves", which would have meant that "Moving Pictures" would never have existed.)

Lately, though, it seems like Rush puts out a live album at the drop of a hat. They regrouped in 2002 after dealing with some personal tragedies (and releasing a live album), released a studio album, then went on tour. They recorded that tour, put a live album out, and some videos on DVD. Then they had an "anniversary" tour, and put out the Feedback EP so they would have some new songs to play live (and a reason to tour). Then they recorded that tour and put out the R30 live album and DVD set.

And so we come to the latest in a long line of live albums, "Snakes and Arrows Live". Like all of their live albums, it's well-recorded, and captures a great set of performances. But frankly, I'm a little underwhelmed. Rush has matured and evolved so much over the past 30 years that you could say that the Rush who recorded "All the world's a stage" is a different band than the one that recorded "Snakes and Arrows Live". So it's interesting to compare the two and hear the differences. But it's getting to the point where I can't tell much difference between one live Rush album and the next. They've released so many over the past 10 years that there's no real difference in the band's sound. The only difference between one and the next is the packaging, the name, and the presence of a few songs on one that aren't on another. (Of course, they all contain "Tom Sawyer". Good thing we have 1084 versions of that song floating around.)

One thing I like about Rush as I get older is that it's like a well-run family business, not just a band. Rush appears to have found a ready market in their long-time fans; people who are willing to shell out money for anything they produce, just because they produced it. I have always done that. I would buy a Rush album within a week of its release, just because it was a Rush album. I may not end up liking it that much, but to not have it seems weird. I've been doing that for 30 years. I'm not the only Rush fan who does this. I know of people who buy every Rush album in every available format (including iTunes), just to have it, because it's "Rush". More power to them. I'm too much of a tightwad for that. But now that it seems Rush has recognized this trend and is putting out material aimed at the "gotta have it" crowd specifically, it's starting to look as much like a cash grab as anything else.

There's supposed to be a DVD set coming soon, "Snakes and Arrows Live on DVD" or something. I think I'll pass on it, and see if the time/space continuum collapses into a bean burrito or something because I've broken tradition. My feeling is that I may miss something, like seeing Geddy wearing a different shirt than before, or seeing Neil's new drums with a slightly different shade of paint than in the last video. Maybe I'll just wait until the next live album, which is sure to appear within the next couple of years. The "Alex standing in a new spot on stage, wearing a hat, playing 'Tom Sawyer' Commemorative Edition" live DVD set.

If you haven't heard any of Rush's live albums from the last 6 or so years, this one is as good as any of them, although I think I like the overall sound of R30 better. If you already own those, and their last studio album, you could probably survive without this one. Unless you're a dedicated Rush fan. In which case you've already bought this, and you're only reading this review to see how many other people are thinking what you're thinking.
