Music Review: Excellent companion to Rush Retrospectives 1 and 2 and bring on Vapor Trails remix album

Rush's brand new CD/DVD set Rush Retrospective 3 is a must for all Rush fans.
This retrospective covers the band's 19 years they spent at Atlantic Records and shows bass player/keyboard player/singer Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson and drummer/lyricist Neil Peart maturing their sound and go back to the basic guitar/drums/bass format over the material.
This retrospective is a great companion piece to the group's 2006 Mercury years retrospective Rush Gold (which was the re-release of Retrospectives I and II in one 2-CD set).
The CD on Retrospective 3 covers many of the band's great tracks from their Atlantic Records period.
The band's 1989 Top 20 Atlantic debut Presto is represented by the title cut (which was a huge rock radio hit) and the band's classic anti-suicide masterpiece called "The Pass" (another rock radio smash and a concert staple).
The band's first US Top 5 album since 1981's Moving Pictures which was 1991's Roll the Bones is represented by that album's infamous title cut, "Dreamline", "Bravado" and a live version of "Ghost of a Chance" (which was recorded in 2008 and included on the band's phenomenal Snakes and Arrows Live DVD). Obvious choices for representing the band's biggest selling album in the Atlantic period.
The band's third Atlantic album (and their highest charting album), 1993's Counterparts is represented by the rock radio hit "Nobody's Hero", "Animate" and the Grammy nominated instrumental "Leave That Thing Alone" (which lost to Pink Floyd's "Marooned"). Some question why "Stick It Out" is missing on CD.
The band's third consecutive Top 5 effort, 1996's Test For Echo is represented by "Driven". The album's biggest hit which was its title track is somehow left off, God knows why.
The band's first album in six years which was 2002's controversial Vapor Trails (which peaked at #6) is represented by two new remixes of "One Little Victory" and "Earthshine". These new mixes trump the original muddy mixes by a longshot. Alex, get Richard Chycki to remix the rest of VT (great record but sonically the worst Rush album ever). I hear lead guitar that was mixed out of "One Little Victory" and acoustic guitar on "Earthshine". We need a remix out soon of that album which was Rush's worst sounding album ever from a mixing and sonic point of view.
The band's 2007 effort Snakes and Arrows (which debuted at #3) is represented nicely here by the album's big hit "Far Cry" and the excellent "Working Them Angels".
The DVD covers most of the videos from the 1989-2008 timeframe (sans "Closer to the Heart" from 1998's live Different Stages album).
All three videos from 1989's Presto is here which are "Show Don't Tell" (somehow not on CD of this collection but a big rock radio hit and an MTV staple in late 1989), the aforementioned "The Pass" and "Superconductor".
The title track to 1991's Roll The Bones is featured and is a great clip (though some fans cringe at hearing the track but I've loved the video the moment MTV aired it in 1991).
Both videos from 1993's Counterparts is featured with the classic "Stick It Out" (somehow not on CD of this collection and I saw this video many times on MTV in late 1993) and "Nobody's Hero" (not ever aired on MTV to my knowledge).
The videos from 1996's Test For Echo are featured which were "Half the World" (which I saw on VH1 Classic once) and the excellent and unique clip for "Driven".
Then two videos from Snakes and Arrows which are for "Far Cry" and "Malignant Narcissisim" and both are great clips.
We then have "The Seeker" and "Resist" both available on R30 and an outtake from that show which was the excellent "Secret Touch".
We finish with the band's first US TV appearance in many a moons with a performance of "Tom Sawyer" and interview from Comedy Central's The Colbert Report.
There you have it, Rush Retrospective 3 in summation.
This is a great compilation album. If you want a good overview to Rush, buy this plus Rush Gold and the Chronicles DVD together to get THE DEFINITIVE RUSH overview.
