Music Review: And they're off...

Rush's early albums took me awhile to get into, as I started as a fan of their 80's material more than anything. 2112 was my first Rush purchase (got it used at the Pasadena Record swap meet, December 1995!), although it took me over a year to get into it (I was sidetracked by 80's live albums A Show of Hands and Exit...Stage Left), but once I did, it was a gateway that enabled me to more fully enjoy their early stuff, and Fly By Night is one of those great records.
The band has tons of energy, and completely smokes on most of the tracks, only pausing for a breath on "Making Memories" and "Rivendell". Although they're still young, raw and brash here, Alex, Geddy and Neil were just getting their feet wet when it came to writing, recording and touring, and that youthful energy definetly carries these songs. The production is really good, with a warm bass and drum sound, and some awesome sharp and fuzzy electric guitar. Although a lot of the lyrical topics are hard rock cliches (sword and sorcery, a Tolkien number, touring cross-country), it's all done with conviction, and just makes the album very fun, even if it is a total time capsule for the mid-70's.
There's no weak tracks and no filler, although you'll find your preferences as you listen. I have a soft spot for the title track, which has a great rhythm and melody, and Geddy's soft vocals are cool near the end. This is one of those songs that only Rush can do. How cool is it that they already have their own identifiable sound as of their second album? Some bands are lucky to have their own sound by their fourth or fifth record. Some never find it. This album is probably worthy of another star, but I have to reserve 4 and 5-star ratings for Rush's later masterpieces. So...
