Music reviews of All The World's A Stage

Music Review: Forgotten classic live album
Rating: 5 Stars

After finally breaking big with 2112 in 1976, Rush had been a driving forceful hard rock band with prog flourishes that had gained a large cult following in the mid 70's. After getting signed in 74, with their debut, that was very Zeppelin-ish blues style hard rock, appealing to that blue collar ethic, the record company thought they had something good going for them, then in '75 Fly By Night came out and it was another small hit for the hard rock market, containng a few noteworthy classics like Anthem, and the title track, then 6 months later the band released Caress Of Steel, which fully realized the bands only hinted at prog rock interests in Fly. The label wasnt happy and the album didnt do so well. With no commercial potential to back it, and a 20 min song, the band were in trouble, they wanted to make more thoughtful music that contained more subtext than the average "baby baby" rock song. But they were getting pressured everywhere to make a record that would be a "hit". So they went out with a bang and did 2112 instead, another side long epic that contained elements of the Fountainhead from novelist Ayn Rand. The album became a surprise hit and Rush released a live album to commemorate their new found success.

Early Rush is some what of a curiosity to those who disovered the band in the 80's, when they were drowned in keyboards and doing more humanitarian lyrically, songs. 70's Rush was all guitars, hard rock, and sci-fi lyrics. This live album is a great overview of some of their best moments off the first 4 albums. Opening with the bombastic double threat of Bastille Day and Anthem, then, in an attempt to segueway some of their fan favorites in with the more 'ordinary-uncharactaristic' Zeppelin style rock from their debut album that were still staples of their set, they do Fly By Night but with In The Mood (a fun party rocker that contained those very same "baby baby" lyrics the band were trying to escape from). The single from 2112, Something For Nothing makes a great appearence, as does one of their more mellower excursions Lakeside Park, which following its ending notes builds a lingering anticipation for the performance of the entire 2112 song. Then we're treated with the first epic the band wrote from their 2nd album By-Tor and the Snow Dog and its sort of companion piece In The End. The band returns to its roots with the staple closing rocker Working Man, this also segueways into it besides Working Man, the only other identifiable song from the debut, Finding My Way, which leads into an asbolutely barnburning and jaw dropping solo from Peart, this is the stuff that would go on to become legend. The band return for one more song, a gem from their first album What You're Doing, which in its original version is a cool but unmemorable rocker, here it's transformed into a monster of a song. Peart's gymnastic drumming all over the place in this. Making it a huge highlight.

So most of this might seem strange to Rush fans who prefer the Moving Pictures Rush, even alot of casual rock fans are not aware Rush was a heavy band at one time, the guitars were center stage, they keyboards were there yeah but they were more like a small supporting instrument at best, used for textures, not the entire song. There's a lot of rare songs known only to hardcore fans here, and some hardcore fans dont even consider this period of Rush that great, more of a stepping stone to what they'd become in the 80's, which i find totally untrue. There's just as much "nerdy" rock music to be found here, amazing drumming, incredible tightness from Geddy, and Alex's guitar work is just flat out great. Hugely underrated. No fan of classic live albums should be without this as well, it's forgotten in the midst of all the Double Live Gonzo, and At Budokan stuff. So for ppl who might be a little weary on early Rush, listen to this. It's a perfect overview of their early hard rock stuff, their first epics and amazing musicianship.
