Music Review: Pretty Much Your Typical Rufio Album

Rufio's 2005 effort, "The Comfort of Home", is third release from the well-known so-cal pop-punk outfit, and while they don't break a lot of new ground, or expand their style all that much, it's still a great piece of listening, especially when the pop-punk scene is all but dying right now. Much like their last two albums there's plenty of things about the album to love, and a few to hate. However despite it's flaws it still feels like the group's most complete work to date (although not their best) and should merit a least a listen from their audience.
Anyone familiar with Rufio should know what the band has to offer in the musical department. Fast, upbeat punk with sometimes intricate guitar riffs, and decent vocals. Musically Rufio is pretty much on the same page that they were on with their last two releases, which is both a good and a bad thing. Good because you know that you're going to great songs like "Let Fate Decide", and bad because there's nothing really new or inventive about the band's sound. In typical Rufio fashion, the album ranges from outstanding songs like "Out of Control" and "Questions and Answers", to total throw-aways like "Drowning" and "A View To Save". Really I've noticed a pattern with all of the cds Rufio has put out thus far. You have 4 songs which are excellent, 4 which are ok, but not great, and about 4 which just don't do anything for you, and that's exactly how this album flows. They also chose to put 4 interludes on this one for some reason (there's only 12 actual songs), which I don't understand that much. They don't really do anything to bridge the music. They're kind of just there. Despite not showing a lot of musical diversity however, the band is just as good on their instruments as they have every been, pulling out some of the best guitar riffs I've heard the band do to date. Scott's voice can kind of wear on you after a while, because he pretty much sings in the same tone the whole record. However it's not enough to hamper the listen as I'm sure we've all grown accustomed to his voice by now. The lyrics aren't that bad, but we've kind of been hearing them for the last three albums, and it'd be a little rewarding to at least see the band attempt something new. Even with the slight repetitiveness and the sometimes less than stellar songs, the album offers a good overall listen if you're a fan of pop-punk (which is getting more and more drowned out by screamo these days). It's nice to see Rufio sticking to what they do best, and not succumbing to the crowd in today's popular music scene.
"The Comfort Of Home" is just what you'd expect from the band, so it falls on you whether or not you think that's a good or bad thing. I think it's nice to hear a good pop-punk album like this. I haven't heard one this good in quite some time, and definitely in the running for one of the best of the year in its category. So if you like speedy, uplifting punk rock, with some emo influences, and great guitar riffs, I would encourage you to look no further than to Rufio. These guys are obviously gifted song writers and musicians, and this album is a testament to that. While not necessarily something different and ground breaking for them, it's definitely up to the level of any previous effort. So don't "Let Fate Decide" whether or not you listen to this album.
